I’ve been in the market for an E90/E92 manual M3 for a while. I decided the other day to test drive an E60 M5 and now I’m obsessed with the V10.
I’m currently considering one of the following 2 cars. Does anyone recognize any of these and possibly know their history?

Budget plenty on maintenance for these cars! Not to scare you, look at MP history and most of them have the asking price in repairs. V10 is special no doubt !!!

The s85 (M5) and the s65 (M3) are in a lot of ways similar but at the time very different (high pressure oil system s85 for example).

Have you done any research on the V10 or did the test drive provide you with your first taste and insight into the V10 engine? Any research on smg 3 gearbox?

Both cars have a list of items to look out for in relation to preventative maintenance. I have had two s85 motor cars M5 and M6 with a s65 M3 in manual as well. If interested I can share experience and others I'm sure would also do the same on this forum.

This exercise may also enhance your ability to decide between the two M5 cars in question, once you view them.

Straight pipe V10 is life.

Very cool engines, but the E60 M5 has a global reputation for being the most unreliable / costly to maintain BMW in history, and it's typically not an exaggeration.

Just be prepared for the costs. They are amazing. I love them as well... but just hearing some of the costs (even for an M car) will make you rethink things depending on how you intend to use it.

Thing is you have to spend the money on preventative work or risk having a paperweight. The longer you leave it the more you have to replace (you may not need a crank if you catch it early enough... crank and bearings 5000km from there... and 5000km after that a whole new motor) - this is just illustrative - it can be better or worse depending I guess

Whatever you think the costs are going to be, have a fund capable of covering 50% more. Also be prepared to immediately spend between R40 and R60K on preventative work unless it is a ridiculously well documented car... also they are not new cars anymore and investigate how much the EDC dampers are (even deletes are not cheap), bushings, mounts etc etc. Do not let the dealer you are buying from do any 'fixes' or 'services' ahead of selling it to you unless you're buying from BMW or you know they are sending it to BMW.

Good luck hunting. One of my favourite colours is Interlagos blue so I am biased based on that from the two you posted LOL

@TurboLlew and @"AdiS" know what they saying. I loved my M5 but let me give you a look at what I did.

Bought my car then:

Bearings : R27k
Smg pump complete: R50k

Vanos system was running sweet, high pressure pump good and so was solenoids.

Did oil services every 5000km, let say 3000km after the preventative work was done a vanos gear jams and grinds metals into engine and other components. Repair unplanned R55k all in all.

Soon after idle actuators.

So yes there is a cost to preventative maintenance but with that high pressure oil system and other components there is the risk of just general component failure outside of that which you should be ready for.

Loved the car, when I took it to redline was magnificent.

Then I got a M6 bought from Shaun on the forum. Car didn't miss a beat and needed nothing and he also did all preventaive maintenance.

Check price of vanos high pressure oil pump and solenoids. That gives you a sense of what the cost of simple components are for these cars.

I've had 3x V10's. Expensive to run. Expensive to maintain. Once the problems start you never feel confident in driving the car on long distances without a plan B.

- Fuel pumps
- Fuel
- Gearboxes
- Clutches
- Throttle bodies
- Aircon evaporator
- Power steering pumps
- Bearings
- Fuel
- Fuel

All above... Common problems eventually on all my cars.

Ok wow I’ve done some reading and was half scared even before starting this thread!

My intention is purely as a weekend car and I’m not planning to rack up high mileage with the car. I’m not scared to spend a little money on maintenance to keep the car running, but also don’t want to get into a bottomless pit.
I agree finding a clean car to start with a known history is very important and also that this doesn’t guarantee trouble free motoring.

Elton has reached out to me and I’m looking at his car this weekend.

Yes please share the link to the wagon?

Two things:

Either you can do ALL your own repairs and can source decent used parts (the only expense really is now your time and the skin on your knuckles)

or

You are wealthy and have no respect for money ... every cent spent on this car is money down the drain ... like i said, fine if you loaded

Also, dont buy simply looking at mileage - rather buy from enthusiast that can describe whats been attended to and what may need to be looked at going forward. Lastly, warm it up and drive it like the race bred machine it is - foot flat :)

They want some absurd amount for it... 599k not neg last I checked. Apparently 450k cash deal, no warranties required etc is something to be sneezed at... they can keep it. Monte Carlo was around that price when the car was still under 100000 and still on plan.
