No tips for E39 Steptronic :fencelook: But I'll take it as the same as the first lot for the Steptronic cars...

Used to launch with foot on the brake. I don't dare now... :fencelook:

To be honest I wouldnt know. Dont want to suggest the above launch as the gearboxes differ. Will see what I can find and post here.

:sorry:

I think the tips for launching a manual that isnt a 6cyl would be different. If I launch my 318i at 2500rpm I bog down like crazy :)

You are 100% correct. On the few trials I have done with the 4cyl cars. Same launch style but 3200rpm seems to work quiet well. What works for you?

You left out E53
:fencelook:
This is roughly how I launch the X5, but I will be modifying my SOP slightly.

Now this is key : Timing usually starts from the moment one has to leave the line , its does not start to count on green. So take your time and focus even if your opponent pulls ahead. It’s the 400m time that determines the winner and not the person that crosses the line first.
Thanks for taking the time to write an in depth How To article:thumbs:
Just to make your above statement a bit clearer.
When doing Dial in racing (MR eliminator) you have to give them a time that you will do the 1/4mile in. If you go faster than this time you will break out and loose if both break out the winner is the one that has broke out by the least.
Lets say you dial in on a 14.00et and your opponent dialed in on a 15.00et Then as soon as both of you are staged your opponents light will go green and one second later yours will go green. In theory you should both then be at the finish line together. In this form of racing your reaction time is very important as its the one that crosses the 1/4mile first that is the winner.

If you are just running normal 1/4mile time your time does not start until you start moving. So in other words you can sit at a green light for 2seconds but that "reaction time" will not influence your elapsed time"et"

Hopes this makes sense.

Hi. Any tips for us E90 320d drivers with manual gearbox.

Same launch style as used with the manual cars as described above

Hold 2000rpm and catch each gear change at 3800rpm.

Hope this makes sense , if not let me know?

Launch style will still be the same , 2nd gear brake boosting. Only difference is hold rev at 2500rpm and the idea is to catch each gear at 6300rpm for it to fall back into its powerband.

Hope this makes sense?

Achieving that perfect launch with a DCT 335i - Launch Control

One of my all time favourite gearboxes , pretty simplistic and the car does all the work so to say:

Put the car into Drive

Press the SPORT button

Press the DTC and then press and hold it till the flag displays

Press the brake and accelerator pedal together at the same time

Release the brake pedal

And away we go.

Also regarding brake boosting, on some threads it is the only way, while others despise it mentioning issues with clutch and torque convertor thereafter...? Anyone?

To elaborate a bit more on the DCT Launch using the LC function...

1- Car needs to be sufficiently warmed
2- DTC one push
3- Sport Mode (shift gear lever to left)
4- Sport + Button
5- Left foot on Break
6- Right foot flat down on accelerator
7- Flag appears
8- let go of the break
9- Launch

You cannot brake boost on a DCT

You either stomp launch or use LC........

100%

Steptronic boxes allow brake boosting.

Does this mean that it is safe for the gearbox and torque convertor. I understand that in any racing situation it will cause more wear, faster, but is it actually a bad thing like riding the clutch?

Remember that when you are brake boosting, you are creating a load on the motor of which then the power is transferred to the drivetrain and in the mean time, the turbos are spooling up. This is the same whether you are launching or rolling. Based on that, there is certainly stress created on your clutch and your brakes for that matter but then again, you ain't going to brake boost for long periods of time, maybe a few seconds at max....
