Went to check the car today as she's been standing for a few weeks. Checking fluids and so on and discovered that there is a load of oil in the coolant expansion tank. Damn.
There is no coolant in the oil in the engine, so I believe it's the heat exchanger by the filter.

So will need to replace that, flush the whole system to clear the oil, etc. etc. etc.

Car is also feeling very laggy below 2000 rpm. Not sure where to look to solve that. In fact it feels worse than before I replaced the intercooler, not sure if it's just more boost making it feel like that or if there is an issue.

That heat exchanger is quite pricey. It's quite easy to replace but getting to it takes patience. I removed intake manifold, coolant hoses (I broke all them so please spray plenty oil in the connectors because all those hoses are expensive). I moved heater valve out the way.

I also replaced the intercooler on my car recently. I'm also experiencing no low down power.

Interesting, I wonder why that is? Doesn't make sense. It should be better.

My theory is because of boost leak the turbo probably boosts more. At full throttle it still goes but not as violently as before. Now it doesn't feel like a turbo car. Feels more na.

Changed the heat exchanger and related seals this past weekend. Man, what a job. The seal between the oil filter housing and block was leaking so that was also replaced, all with BMW OEM parts. There was oil on the covers under the body, so all have been stripped off and will be cleaned this coming weekend and re-fitted, just ran out of time.

Flushed the engine and related ancilliaries over and over again, I reckon I've got 95% of the oil in the galleries out. I also removed all coolant pipes and the thermostat and flushed and cleaned them before refitting. Whatever residual oil is left will eventually work itself out. While I was at it, cleaned out the new intercooler, which to be honest, wasn't dirty at all with virtually no oil in it. Cleaned all the boost pipes too.

I will fill all fluids this week and run the car through a heat cycle or two to ensure no leaks before fitting all the bottom covers.

Luigi you have the patience of a saint, truly mate well done for sticking at it!

I would have given up long time ago, maybe that's just because mechanical work often freaks me out, I always expect the worst and feel like I'm a fraud mechanic even though I'm probably the most fastidious person I know and can wrench pretty well.

Your mind can play games with your head when it comes to the complexity of cars, you have to suck your thumb much of the time even with a service manual and wing it with what tools you have.

Engine running again yesterday. Lag seems to be better than before, no idea why???

Sorted out the siliconed rear shock mount too, replaced it with a new one. Will take some pics and post this week.

FordKoppie aka Chris came round to drive it yesterday and we noticed a slight coolant leak on one of the pipes going into the block on the right hand side of the engine. It's probably not seated 100% as all the pipes were removed to clean them out, now I need to remove the intake manifold again to get to it and make sure all is good. Will probably end up doing that Friday or Saturday.

Car should then be ready for test drives and for sale.

PS: Chris has the most amazing 540i Manual Individual. Looks and sounds great.

Managed to get some really good black door cards yesterday for a good price. Will be doing this once I've sorted out the leak and the rear ARB's:

The above images are not with leather seats, but you get the idea.

Have to remove the leather panels from my existing door cards and place them onto the black door cards. Means I don't have to try and drill holes for the Harmon Kardon speakers to fit in the black door cards.

Guys, need some assistance please.

Car seems to be steering from the rear on the motorway. This points to the RTAB's being shot. Went to replace them today and it seems they were done before. They are solid as and no real movement as per failed units.

Any ideas as to what it could be? I have new RTAB's but no point changing them if they seem to be ok.
