The long road - E34 M5 S38b36 a resurrection story

Hey Guys

Its taken me quite some time to gather the guts time and patience to tackle this.

At first I did not want to create this thread in fear of not being able to complete the project. So this in itself is good news. As I think there is light at the end of the tunnel now.

Before I begin with te pic heavy content let me first say tremendous thanks to fellow fanatics that have made this endeavour possible.

A1xander aka Peter, your ongoing advice and support and many many phone calls has been an inspiration spurring me on even when I lost hope.

Rick and Chris I owe thanks to as well. all the advice goes a long way to the success of getting the car back on the road. I am elated in writing this thread as for the first time since June I have hope that the car will be back on the road soon and better than ever.

Now the story.

The E34M5 is a remarkable car. One that I unfortunately mistreated and now have to fix my mistakes. Mixing ethanol is a bad Idea and it gutted an exhaust valve. Thus losing compression on cylinder 4 and stranding the car at home.

After weeks of diagnosing and contemplation the decision was made to remove the head and get to the bottom of the problem.

In the meantime I have also had the injectors reconditioned. New filters, pintle caps and orings. Bench flow tested and ready for action.

Spark plugs out

Injectors

More stripping

More to come

Had a stuck bolt and was fortunate to eventually find a "turbo socket" aka bolt removal socket

After removing the cam carrier the head finally came off

Dropping the parts off at engineering. Thanks again Peter.

The latest is that the head can be saved and will need a fair amount of work to get it back to its former glory.

Peter if you don't mind feel free to post your findings on here as well.

I have ordered the new intake valves and am expecting delivery hopefully before the end of this week.

Nice going.....'dem Bosch fellows' could have at least given the injectors a lick of paint, as no doubt their services are not cheap. Later

Pic number 5 second post does not belong as it is from a devil juice car.

The cylinder head was taken to the engineers for a thorough check up.

Findings are as follows:

All exhaust valve guides need replacement
All exhsust seats have been from previous machining sunk in too far so new seats will need to be fitted and cut
Intake guides will be needed for 4 valves and maybe seats.
4 new intake valves needed
2 exhaust valves needed

Although some of the damage was driver induced the bulk of it appears to be from previous attempts to have the head refurbished.

A series of pics of the damaged valves

Obviously burned

This one is bent.

As are these

and these

Headwork at present stands at R11 000 excluding valves at roughly R800 each for the inlets and the exhaust Andy got spares when he bought the car.

Whichever engineering shop worked on this head previously should hang its collective head in shame. (imho)

Thank you Peter :ty:
I decided to get 12 new intake valves which should arrive this weekend.

Also managed to get a good deal on the S50B32 tensioner and washer replacement. Will post pics of the S38 and S50 tensioners side by side once I collect it.

Will the engineering shop cut the 30/45/60deg angles on the valves and seats again as in the originals. Because I see the current valves doesn't have it. Lots of potential power loss in the absence of those angles.
