just picked up a new one today, my old one was screwed.

however, it has this plastic "ring", of which I am unaware of it's purpose

thought?

looking at it more, maybe it is an installation "tool"

ie, you push the whole thing through the hole, and then you pull that to "seal" it

well whatever it was, it did work as an installation tool.

push entire base through gearshifter hole, and then pull to seal "tongue/groove"

@ e30 Freak, Where are you based, I have a brand new one that i never got around to replacing on my old e30.

Let me know if you are keen.

@Kabal, is the ring impregnated into the black rubber boot? or is it loose? If it is attached to the boot, it may be a retaining ring(although it seems a bit bigger) but on the other hand, it could be indicating the direction to be inserted, as the little tab on the top may have a location on the chassis.

Let us know.

it's removeable. I am 90% sure it serves dual purpose of keeping shape in storage, and as an installation assistant

I got one from an E46 and its slightly too small.
