To conclude this thread, the 540i is sold. Lemons handled the whole process in a relatively painless manner. Their communication was sometimes a bit lacking, but otherwise I cant fault them.
Financially, I pretty much broke even on this car - excluding labour which I would estimate to be in the region of 1000 hours. Pretty crazy when you think of it.
Emotionally, I am bankrupt and whoring around with other cars to distract me from the pain this car caused me
It was a weird journey for sure. I immediately fell in love with the E39. It was the car I would gravitate towards over the weekends. It was the default holiday car, even my wife would throw some rare compliments at it. I almost forgot about my E34 when I owned the E39...
Then I did the paintwork which was a long and painful experience immediately followed by a complete suspension overhaul where I made the mistake of installing Bilstein B6 shocks which totally ruined the ride of the car. The spark simply never reignited, not helped by the headgasket issue which left me and my wife stranded on holiday. The trust was gone, the relationship was unsalvageable and it simply had to go.
It isn't a lemon of a car, whoever bought it got an absolute bargain and a very special, sorted and immaculate car which should treat them well for many years to come.
Im sure there is a lesson in here somewhere, probably something related to not spending all you money on old cars, I dunno
TLDR: E39s are awesome cars, but I dont like them anymore and dont see myself ever owning another one
