Question around turbo lag

Hi guys

I assume most turbo cars suffer from some sort of turbo lag? what is acceptable turbo lag on the 320d?

I feel that my car has this issue sometimes, e.g when accelerating there is a slight delay and all of a sudden boom i go like a bat out of water. this sometimes makes the driving experience uhmm not so nice.

But this only happens very rarely but happens nonetheless. any thing i can get BMW to check? still under MP.

Use the MP

At what RPM does this happen?
Could be dirty boost sensor or leak.

not really sure what RPM but on low RPM like when taking a corner and accelerating out of it.

Yes the 320d does have turbo lag. It happens very low down in the rev range (Below 2000rpm) and is normal.

It is also normal to not like it. Nobody likes lag, but it's there to stay. As the saying goes, "Lag gives me road rage, and boost relaxes me."

Yes i know, i just want to make sure its in normal range and i'm not living with it for no reason. When i go in for next service i will ask them to check it for me.

Which 320d is this F30, E9* orE46, the latter ones did suffer from quite a bit of turbo lab, the newer ones mainly suffer from a bit of lab in Eco pro mode only otherwise it's not as noticeable as before.

The N47 in the E90 LCI suffers from the kind of turbo lag that the OP is experiencing...

M47 in the E90 and N47 in the F30 suffers from minimal lag....

Hmm my 320d had very little lag.. Play with it to get the revs err down into the torque band and all should be well.. :chef:

Does it use a twin scroll turbo?
If so you shouldn't have much turbo lag..
Also a reason could be your actuator on the turbo, or stuck variable vanes.
Not sure what turbo is used in your car though....

Lag, is the delayed response past the positive pressure threshold, eg at 3k rpm you lift and then reapply the throttle, and experience delay.

What you all talk about is the Positive pressure threshold or boost threshold. The time it takes the system to form positive pressure from low turbo speed, or more accurately, the rpm at which the engine pumps enough gas to propel the turbo fast enough to overcome negative manifold pressure.

Two VERY different things.
