These are all known as "aftermarket" extended warranties. The best providers are those that hold your hand and walk you through every detail if you're a new customer. A singular consideration when trying to find the best car warranty is the standing of the company. It's always good to keep all your options open, and also contact your local dealership and find out what offers they might have. It's often very difficult to get a better offering than that provided by the dealership (OEM). Also, be very aware that whatever plan you purchase at the point of sale on a financed car and don't pay upfront and fully for, gets added to your monthly premiums. Unlike simple monthly premiums directly from the warranty supplier, those financed premiums attract interest. Sometimes a lot! A R5,000 motor plan can cost R10,000 after 54 months! Buy it outright if you fancy it, or get your own, but the last option should be to pay it as part of the monthly premium tied to the sale! No one is going to go out of their way to tell you this - except us of course!

If you’re unsure, be brutal about the legitimacy of a company’s offer, in terms of at least one reality that might lurk behind it. Many warranties nowadays come from service providers only tenuously linked to the distributor or manufacturer. It's completely cheeky but also possible that in the event of needed repairs a dealership might loathe complying, as they never gleaned a benefit from the initial sale of the policy.

Further to the above point, also be aware that larger and more populous dealerships are simply easier to use, as they’re all over. Convenience is going to start counting when the nearest authorised repair agent is in the next town.

One last tip for those who value online sorters - by all means, use Hippo to get extended warranty quotes to peruse. At least you'll have first-level assurance that all listed providers have met basic fiduciary and other business requirements. With that said, nothing beats an hour or two doing your homework online. It's critical to shop around for pricing and not just accept the first quote that comes through. So just a note on my experiences:

Hollard: Useless if you have an M car - the limits don't make ANY sense. "the car has less than x mileage" is marketing. Call them and actually check what they offer. I asked a few questions and they said 'well if the engine breaks, we will change the individual piston or ring and it won't cost R100000 for a rebuild :eek:mgwaiting:

READ READ READ - READ THE FINE PRINT!

Motorite: Good luck getting them to call you back. They take your call quickly and then a 'sales person will call you back' but I tried numerous times with no luck.

Liquid Capital (when the incompetent sales person eventually calls you back): the car must still be on motorplan…. but the original motorplan. IF you have extended your motorplan with BMW they don't care and will offer you something useless. You have to extend with them at 100000km or else they treat you as though you have not had motorplan for 30000km (their words not mine).

Auto & General - Also treats you as though you haven't had motorplan for 30000km. Limits make absolutely ZERO sense no matter what car you have.

Should we change the title to "3 of the worst extended warranties in SA" ? :)

I'm personally with Hollard for my 2013 BMW 118i AT. I'm on their highest plan that costs avg. R600/pm. So far I have not been impressed, my instrument cluster needs replacing and the total contribution from them for an R12k repair is R950.00.

I'm just keeping it for the big-ticket items like the turbo and gearbox and wifey is abit paranoid to cancel it. We've had the car since new and touch hood no problems really, so for me I don't feel this extended warranty is applicable as I know the entire history of the car and big-ticket failure on these cars are not so common.

I'd rather just pay cash than waste my time with any of these. Had a few different ones on various cars. I either never needed them, or it was always a hassle.

It would probably only make sense if you know you have a weak component, or a component that is nearing the end of it's lifespan - and the warranty costs about the same price as the replacement. Then you get your part sorted out and have the rest of the warranty as a 'bonus'.

I think my biggest issue is really that they dictate how you end up repairing your car. We are fine with BMW cos they replace entire systems or you get a new engine or gearbox in a crate so you play by their rules and diagnostic procedures and sometimes their BS.

However If I am gonna have a repair done out of warranty you can bet I am not going to half-ass it the way you might be forced to with one of these (or best case they cover some tiny amount and you must fill in the rest)

Just a side note. Had to tow my mates Alfa Guiletta from Alfa sandton to centurion (30Km) yesterday. Also has one of these "mechanical breakdown" thingies. Well needless to say they would only cover 9500 for the blown turbo and catalytic converter and Alfa's quote was in excess of 60k. We took it to a reputable turbo specialist which will be roughly 17K. But he said dealing with them is a huge headache and very time consuming.

PS: On a positive note the X5 towed like a dream, forgot I was even lugging an Alfa behind me :roflol:

Engine: R25000 - That will barely cover labour
Gearbox: R18000 - Good luck with that covering even the tiniest of failures
Diff: R18000 - Might be useful
Turbo Assembly: R8000 - on an M5 :biglol: :roflol:
Management system: R8000
Cooling system: R7500
Head gasket: R4500 (WHAT?)

Then there is vehicle hire for R1500... Installment protection of R1500 (good luck claiming for that)…

I don't know what car these policies were designed for but they aren't for BMWs.

I also don't know what kind of mechanics they expect you to use, but reputable ones will not charge these kinds of rates...

So this is an extremely suspect clause that allows them to basically weasel out of paying out in full EVEN WITH THE SHITTY LIMITS above.

Keep a buffer of cash. Be prepared for failures. Don't deal with scum.

I got my warranty plan from these guys.

Mutual Safes

Basically i just put money in there for when my car/bike feels needy.

At least i can use it, and not deal with BS schemes.

It would probably only make sense if you know you have a weak component, or a component that is nearing the end of it's lifespan - and the warranty costs about the same price as the replacement. Then you get your part sorted out and have the rest of the warranty as a 'bonus'.

I had my dampener pulley replaced a few weeks ago, using my warranty, hence the sale of the dampener I had bought. They covered 80% of the total cost and only took 1 day from authorization until the car was ready. Considering I am paying a paltry R350 a month, I've already used a year's worth of premiums in one claim..

I use the warranty as a top up fund for actual costs. I just need to make one more claim and then it would've paid off another year of premiums and the total cost of the 2 year duration.. Everything else thereafter, is just a bonus..

I had one of these extended warranties with Absa on a GTI. The plan was available after the manufacturer one expired and it was a two year policy with a once off payment. It was unlimited cover on the major components.

On the GTI the timing tensioner was an issue which caused a ton of damage to the head when it failed, they covered all expenses. The even advised to rather use a VW dealer for the repairs which I thought was strange as these guys normally look for the cheap way out.
There are good policies out their just make sure you understand the defined limits and clauses.
 
I had an M-Sure warranty from the dealer, I paid upfront and had good cover. 100k on engine and 75k on gearbox. Cover limit for each item is listed separately. They also paid out without a problem. After two years I wanted to extend but they couldn't give me the same cover due to the age and millage so I switched to king price. I haven't had to claim from them yet.

When shopping around compare the cover you will be getting, in my opinion 5k on gearbox and 10k on engine is useless given the cost to repair/replace these.

Also see what you are covered for, some will only pay for parts, most will pay for parts and labour, and majority will not pay for diagnostics and testing and consumables like oil etc.
