By the way, I am lead to believe that my Dad's 1998 540iM is a rare car. Anybody knows how many was made?

From what I quickly read it seems that the manual was standard on the 540i and the auto was an option, doesn't mean that it isn't rare though, but I have no idea about the production numbers involved.

no, i think its just the other way around, the auto was standard, manual was very rare..

Though I have to admit you can't always trust Wikipedia, but its info on BMW's seems pretty accurate.
Either way the manual gearbox it pretty awesome and rare.

The manual 540i was introduced after the auto, and only a limited number were sold. Think they were only available in the e39 in 98 and 99, and once the M5 was introduced in 2000 the manual 540i was no longer produced. So to answer your question they are pretty rare!
