Oil top up interval - e46

On a e46 330i with 140K kilos on the clock: Is it normal to have to do an oil top up every 2-3 months. I normally only do short trips, occasionally twice a month I drive between JHB and PTA.

I don't do it scientifically, I just add a bit until the dipstick is on 3/4 mark more or less.

Top up with Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40. Should I use thicker oil or should I worry about something else?

I'm not the expert on this topic, but all my ex straight 6 petrols (E39 525i, E36 M3, E46 330i) never used a drop of oil between services.

5W30 fully synthetic is the correct spec - Petronas Syntium. You should not be topping up every 2 months.
