Thanks guys for the valuable information. I contacted BMW and they said that I need to do an inspection service since the last oil change with them was 5 years ago (119 000km) and now the car is at 124 000km. The cost is R2800 booked for tomorrow. What does the inspection service entail and is worth it or should I do it myself?

With what you've just added, I'd DIY ta make sure to give the oil the max drain time possible - no oil change in 5 years is a little scary !

Take her out for a nice long drive, come home jack it and pull the covers and drain plug. Drop down and leave over night to get as much as possible out, odf the old oil.

Also get a little book and write in it part numbers, prices and dates of items changed for future refference.

typical, while the car was with them they told me that they needed to replace a whole host of things which will cost in total 5.8k. I told them to just replace the oil and oil filter which came to just under 1k. I also got a list of what needs to be replace and will do it myself.:ty:

how was it possible to do an oil change on an m3 at R1000?

bmw uses castrol txt and if i remember correctly the car uses 7litres, then the cost of the the oil filter plus bmw's labour charge?

I meant to say, R1000 is a little too cheap by bmw standards, so how did he did the o.p get this right?

It cost me more then that when I did it myself, 7litres mobil1 oil, plus oil filter and sumpnut plug

The dealer probably just threw in the cheap Castrol. Some seem to put in 10w60 others just what they have on hand. There is alot of confusion as to which oil the s50b30 takes , even at dealer level.

Okay, this is what the invoice say...

BMW engine oil service incl. oil disposal - R226.40
Oil filter - R146.10
Eng. oil 100ml qty:70 unit price:R6.74 total: R471.80
(I wonder if this is not a cheap oil???)

TOTAL INV = R962.55 incl. VAT

Parts to be replaced in inspection service:

spark plugs Y5DDC M3 - R593.10
w/screen additive - R11.30
BMW coolant antifreeze - R206.80
Brake fluid - R73.40
wiper rubber - R294.80

TOTAL LABOUR inclusive of the oil service R3113.00

Total for inspection service = R5597.97 incl. VAT

Interesting.. Agreed that the dealers still don't know the correct oil for the S50B30 engine..
My last 3 services had Castrol TWS 10W60 put in..

Which dealer did u go to Kpakkiri?

I confirmed with them this morning and they said that they use Magnatec Professional 5w30

I think a 30 is abit thin. Even though my car has run 30 before with no ill effects. I run 5w40, from what I researched, it seems like the best option. But this is forum knowledge and not BMW direct scientifically chosen. Alot of people also run TWS as it's now chosen as the M car blanket oil. Tough to say, though I think both are fine if you change frequently and follow warm up procedure.
