What is normal oil consumption?

Just wondering whether it is accepted as normal for my car to use the oil it does. It's a 2010 E92 325i with 183k on the clock. Perfect service history with oil changes every 10k.

I don't see any sign of an oil leak and the mechanic has also not spotted any in the last 3 services. Also no smoke at all.

Car has a bit of a rev hunt when starting cold, but this settles within 30 seconds and then it runs fine.

Yet, the last 20k kms I have had the oil warning come on at about 7000km after the service asking for 1l of oil. When I top up it goes away and stays away.

Is this my CPV starting to say goodbye, or is this normal blowby related loss?

I am still at a loss regarding the rev hunting at cold start as the vanos solenoids seem fine, the vanos check-valves were cleaned etc. Could this also possibly be PCV related?

Rev hunting could be a faulty oxygen sensor. I'm having the same issue on mine (129k km) and its throwing out an oxygen sensor fault.

I'll ask the mech to have a look at that, but weirdly we've never pulled any codes- mech checks every service and nada. That's why I thought vanos solenoids initially or that check-valve, because they apparently tend to not throw a code, but all is in order there.

Thanks, ja that's also my suspicion. Just weird that I have zero other symptoms (no whistle, suction on the oil cap or smoke), but it does seem the most likely culprit. Car is due for a service in 3k then I'll have it looked at as a matter of course.

Depends on driving style. Owning a car with also an N52 engine and have used oil between services and sometimes not. Engine, vanos, PCV, never touched, no smoke. does the occasion hunting since owning it. never had issues and currently sitting at 225XXXKm ( service history up to date ).
The 1 litre in 7000Km might be worry some but again, short distance and occasionally racing it will also use more oil. If PCV system is faulty , you will smell it( Burning Oil ), it will smoke.
