No power steering E90 323i 2007

Been noticing a whining noise from the engine when turning at low speeds, parking etc, which got louder as I approached full lock. Today when I hit full lock the noise stopped and the steering wheel got really heavy.

Checked the power steering fluid reservoir - it's full, but the fluid looks quite dirty, not the red colour as it is when new.

Also checked the belt - it's still on and moves when the car is idling.

Could the pump be shot?

What are my next steps? Can I drive the car like this until it's sorted? Will driving cause further damage?

I would agree

when I saw the topic title whilst waiting for the page to open, my inital thoughts were
1) power steering fluid
then
2) drive belt

seeing as you mention that you checked both, the only option left is the actual pump

there is still an outside chance that it could be air in the system (cavitating) but I am led to believe that the system is "self bleeding"

the fact that you mention that the fluid is a dark colour also doesn't bode well.

Morning ,

Same thing happened to me when I purchased my E90 2nd hand, pump packed up within the same weekend. Bought it the Saturday and Sunday steering was the same problem as yours. Stiff and belt running with power fluid still full.

I replaced mine by Sydsuspension in Pretoria west for like R2500 but you might want to check out www.g-drive.co.za for their prices on the steering pump. G-drive do tend to take little more then a week to supply you with the goodies but they are the cheapest I found.

Sounds like your pump packed up :sorry:
