Another update:

So had the new belt fitted. Thought about doing it myself, but as I'm going away tomorrow I thought I'll rather have someone who's done it many times before fit it for me in the hopes that it will reduce the possibility of it going wrong over the weekend. I did however stay around and kept an eye on what they did. Now there seems to be no more squeak from the engine bay while the engine is running. Result :thumb:
...

Scratch that...

Ever since I bought the car the belt would screech when I start or switch off the engine. It didn't do it always though. Sometimes I can start the car with no noise from the belt. So it's a on off thing. Recently though it started squeaking all the time. The new belt is now not squeaking while the engine is running, but it would still screech right at start up or if I switch the engine off. While at the mechie this morning it seemed fine, but just found it isn't. It does it right as the engine fires and then it's quite. Also just as the engine stops would it squeak.

So it's back to more Googling now. Sigh :(

Main belt tensioner?

Replaced the one on the white 540i a week back, and it seems to have gotten rid of most of the squeaking, still has a slight bit, but will have to see what it will be like with a new belt.

Really? I checked the Febi site first thing and didn't see it there. Must have done something wrong. :dunno:
If you get the invoice post the Febi part number as well please.

Thanks

The price was R495 and there are two numbers with it on the invoice, not sure which one (if any) is the part number:

Went home for lunch and the coolant warning came on, but home was just around the corner. Stop the car and and switched it off. Car was already warm so I didn't chance it and left the cap closed. Had some lunch and came back to the car about 20min later. Opened the bonnet only to find the tank empty. Took almost 2L.

I noticed some water splats on the pipe that goes to the radiator which seems to suggest that the fan is throwing water against it. So it might just be a pipe that's leaking. Ran out of time to look for the leak, but the water level still looks good. Will take a closer look after work. Sorry, no picks yet.

Nic, go check the radiator at the top pipe, it might be breaking on the plastic rad side. Mine did that. You cant see it untill you take the pipe of and it crumbles up at which point you buy a new rad. Only solution.

Time for a small update. A while back I went to Rick for diagnostics just see what's what and although I was expecting some weird unheard of fault, there was actually not a single error code. :)

You can also see by how much % the car had to tune itself from factory spec to compensate for whatever it might need to, but even that was on 0%. :):)

Apart from what sounds like a noise lifter when hot, she seems to be running great.

So this pasted Saturday me and my brother decided to drive to Rooi-Els which is about 30km from Somerset West along the R44. See link below:

Sadly I didn't really take any picks, but here's a few I took with my phone.

And just as I wanted to take another pick this 1M came round the corner. So I waited until it was nicely in shot :)
Then we jumped into the 540 and hauled some ass to catch up. It's the first time I've driven the 540 with some spirit (Although still very far from the limit) around corners and bends and the handling is just brilliant. And then the V8 growl    I wanna go again :)

Speaking off, I actually have some updates.

First thing was that the cable which allows one to open the door from the inside snapped. This was a few weeks back during all the previous weeks of cape wind and rain. It was determined that the cable was the likely culprit and so I went to a local scrap yard to get another. They didn't have, but they directed me to a workshop where they make cables. Sadly I didn't have the old cable out the door yet so I couldn't get a new one made.

So one day after work I pulled the door card off to get the old cable out and as with BMW plastic clips, half of them came off the door card and stayed fitted to the door :shakehead:
Unfortunately the cable snapped right at the hook inside the door and I couldn't figure how to get it out and gave up for the time being as it was getting dark.

Forward to the weekend...

Since half the clips came off already, pulling the door card again was easy. The first pick is my view to get to the hook that was still in there and because it's the drivers door, you can't actually push the lock down to get a better view.

But then I took a screw driver and pushed the lock in as if the door was closed and that allowed me to push the lock down.
IMG_3439.jpg

Now with the lock down I could see the target, market in red.

After fiddling for about 10min maybe it fell to the bottom of the door and I got it out.
Old Cable:

By now the weather had turned:

None the less, I got in the car and drove to the workshop to get a new cable made. Got there and it was closed. Noticed there was a piece of paper in the window and figured it would be working hours or something. I got out in the pouring rain and it said that they had moved. So back in the car and I went looking for the new address. Found it, but they were busy moving and sorting. The guy who does the cables said he'll make me one quick. Charged me R57 and considering that it's R85 new from the agents I think could have just gone for one from the agents, but the local dealer didn't have any in stock. So 30min and R57 later I had a new cable.

Got home and the rain let up again for a bit. Now the big mission started to get the new cable fitted. There was just no way as there was some piece of plastic in the way and I got my brother to come and help. By now I was so into what I was doing and trying to get it done before the rain started again that I completely forgot about taking any further picks. We took a piece of wire and bent the point in a small hook. Then hooked and pulled the arm into which the cable needed to go. Finally we got the hook in, but it already started to rain again. Took the door card and loose clips inside to glue it all back with superglue. First had to clean off the old glue which took about 2 hours. Decided to call it a day as I was soaked and absolutely freezing. Was raining to much to work anyway.

Then the Sunday the sun was edging through the clouds and I went out to put everything back together. First I cleaned off some of that black goo crap around the lock mechanism. Hooked up the cable to the handle, put the door card on, and then when I wanted to fit the screw that goes behind the mirror switch it just pushed right through. Had to pull the door card again and one clip came loose. The piece of plastic where the screw needs to go into was missing. Looked around in the car as it must have fell off. Found it and decided not to bother with the one loose clip. Was just totally fed up with it. Got my brother to help again as it's easier to fit the door card with extra hands especially when the ground is wet and you can't sit on it.

The door can now finally be opened from the inside again. You know, if BMW made that hole slightly bigger it would have been 10 times easier. :banghead:

Not sure if I've ever mentioned this before, but the left wheel would scrape against something when turning left to full lock. I've been told that it's just turning sharper to the left than the right, but when I look at the steering wheel it doesn't seem like it even though it's not an accurate why of checking.

I've had others check it, but they've always said they don't see anything wrong. Then about 2 weeks back I had the car on a lift and I took a good look my self and actually found something. See if you can spot the difference between left and right below.

This is the Left wheel as you sit in the car:

This is the Right wheel as you sit in the car:
