Along with the launch of the facelifted 2015 BMW X3, the next generation BMW engines is being introduced to the market.

The new B47 engine replaces the N47 power unit and like its predecessor is a four cylinder in-line, common rail injection, 1,995 cc displacement with a single turbocharger with variable turbine geometry.

While the N47 in the xDrive18d and xDrive20d made 143 and 184 while the new B47 provides 150 and 190 bhp. The maximum torque for the based B47 remains at 360 Newton meters, but it is now available between 1500-2250 rpm (previously 1750-2500). With the more powerful stage, the maximum torque climbs from 380 to 400 Newton meters between 1750-2250 rpm (previously 380 Nm 1750-2750 rpm).

The 335 will be the first to get the B58 motor..

So this discussion popped up a while back, was just waiting for the first engine to become official before posting..

The discussion was centred around the new S55 motor in the F80 M3 and how it is quite a big departure from the engine blueprint of BMW's in terms of what they have in their turbo range. It is a high revving Turbo motor, producing peak power high up, with torque low down. Essentially way more similar to a NA motor than a turbo motor. This is due to the change in stroke and bore, even though still a 3.0l. The engine basically trades some peak torque figures for better revving characteristics.

That said, the discussion was if the S55 motor is a big departure, will BMW be changing their regular engines to match this, low and behold the B58 engine name popped up soon after.. so in theory look at the S55 to see what direction the B58 will go, probably a high revving twin turbo motor.

Thats all that I know about that..!
