I have no idea. Only reason I changed was to prolong the bearing wear.Wizard$ said:Awesome car, and interesting article on oil - does anyone know if 0w40 will be better than 10w60 for the e39 s62 engine as well?
I did 39x on this tank, consumption is 12.2, and range left is 130km. But filling up after work again.Bugger said:pimpassdaddy said:I still can't believe your consumption... It's insane. Best I have is 18.0l

No I didn't go that route. Wanted to but opted out for now until more success stories come from that. For now I ordered from bmw themself, 10 red and 10 blue (factory spec), total is 6660. Most of the guys in the states has just replaced the bearings to original, kept oil on 0w40 and have had success. Apparently the micron's of wear compensates for the tight bearing clearances.Ratslaaf said:Pho3niX90 said:I ordered the bearings, so will change them next weekend.
Take lotsa pics! Did you order bearings from VAC? I believe they very recently changed to bearings that were slightly thinner to allow for the Calico coating to not affect clearances. These were done as a special for VAC direct from Clevite and will have the Clevite brand on the back, as opposed the the BMW '703' stamp in the back.
And yes, take lotsa pics!!!!
Ratslaaf said:That's not too bad for bearings hey. Are you just doing rod bearings or main bearings as well? For that price I'd guess it's just rod bearings.

The main bearings are not the problem.
And changing out the Mains is one massive task.
Engine out operation for sure. Not something you can do from underneath.
Pho3niX90 said:You can in fact change it from underneath, if you have the right tools off-coarse. Here is an explanation

No you cant. Those in the link are big end bearings replaced.
For the mains, you need to take off the entire block "girdle". Then to drop the entire crank. The gearbox needs to be out.... and .....and ....and
You get the picture:rollsmile:
