They decide to take all the covers from the bottom of my car and... The noise just dissapeared!!!
They are now placing them one by one, to find which one was causing the buzzing noise...

As soon as i got any more info's about it. I'll tell.

Great.

Tell them to take the big front sump guard and bent the corners upwards slightly, I put the corner of the sump guard on a block about 50 mm high and gently stand on the sump guard till it would "give" a bit, repeat on the remaining corners.

The BMW dealer informed me that they had contact BMW Portugal directly and they send them the solution.
They just put a sponge on the left side plastic sump guard.

I have listened to the noise and is difficult to say. Like I mentioned earlier in this post, one needs to remove all the covers off the bottom of the vehicle and retest the vehicle and see if the noise is gone, depending on the out come will depend on what route to take. Were are you based?

Ok thanks.. i'm in Belgium but so far BMW can't even hear the sound. I believe this could be the problem as all mentioned factors apply to me:
- You can only hear it well in the driver's seat (left top)
- sound comes earlier when driving in the wind
- starts at 120-130km/h depending on the wind
- it's not the wheel, tyres or wheel bearing because they replaced or checked it

Sounds like the same problem, ask the dealer to remove the covers and go test it yourself and then you will have the answer. May take a bit of effort but at least you will get the answer you need.

I have the f30 320i Luxury Line automatic. It has 143000 on the dial. I too heard the hum over and above the usual RfT noises. I asked passengers if they could hear it but no one else did. The noise would usually get worse around 90kmh but then I started hearing it earlier. It would then disappear and then it came back again. I changed tyres as mine were due but only the rear tyres. Supaquick thinking it was a front wheel drive switched and put new front and the noise continued. As I needed to change brakes, I waited but on the day I had to purchase the brakes, the dash lit up like a Christmas tree with drive stability warning lights. This in turn affected the tyre pressure monitor. This eventually resulted in the cruise control also mulfunctioning. When I changed the brakes, we drove around to test and the noise was there as were the warning lights. We drove hard left, hard right and there was a difference in the sound and the mechanic was convinced it was to do with wheel bearing. The ride has since gone rougher as if I am on medium gravel road. He put it on the lift and accelerated to 60km per hour and the whining was deafening and it seems to be from the the back. His diagnosis was that the problem was the diff.
A day later, the lights are still on, the ride is rough and am now sticking to the left lane with the trucks while the mechanic source the differential as I am beyond the motorplan.
Question
Is his diagnosis in the ball park?
What is the replacement cost of the diff?
Could it be anything else?
Has anyone else had a similar problem?
Is it better to fix or cut my losses?

Ok so just out of the blue cruising on the highway the other day the car now has a slight humming noise like a wheel bearing as soon as you go over 100km/h. Its on its loudest at about from 120km/h. You can only hear it clearly on smooth tar roads. I have tried to figure out what side by changing lanes sharply at 120 but it stays the same. I have even switched to neutral but it stays the same.

I can only rule these options
1 wheel bearing
2 gearbox
3 diff
Any other F30 drivers experience a similar problem

Check that all the covers under the car are properly fastened and that all the screws are secure and none missing. I had an irritating noise at about 130 onwards and tightening all the cover screws solved the problem on an F30 320d

Have the pictures gone AWOL from this thread? I have the infamous drone on a 328d between 55 and 65 MPH, that's 88-104 kph for my metric readers. :smilebounce: A 328i loaner I drove had the EXACT same noise at those speeds.:thumbdo:

sorry been hectic today, yes, when we removed it the noise went away.
From what I remember in the "old" days a metal sump guard was optional (all SA vehicles had them but in Europe it was optional). As far I know in todays BMW's they are now part of the strength of the vehicle so I assumed the "red circle" is a metal/aluminium sump guard.
We also thought it was a wheel bearing or something to that effect. I am not saying this is the solution, but your suyptons are almost identical. I just read through some of the original post. Our symptons were as follows:
Humming droning noise from left/front.
We also noticed that it generally started around 100km/h
We also noticed that if you drove into the wind the spead at which you hear it would sometimes get affected, if you drove with the wind you may need to go up to 120km/h
Swerving on the road made no difference (left to right)
Putting it into N no difference
Switching off the engine also had no effect.
If you sit in the l/f seat it was very noticeable from the l/f foot well/wheel area.
Eventually after more tests decided to remove all the covers off the bottom of the vehicle.
Noise went way and then started putting them back one at a time till the noise came back , a word of caution, make sure that they don't break off if not secured properly (experience).
Eventually when refitting the big aluminium sump guard (red circle)noise came back.
We then just "gently" bent the corners up vey slightly to change the profile of the "bottom" of the vehicle. Noise been gone since.

We replaced the one and the noise was slightly less but still clearly there so did the other wheel as well and gone. That was on the X3. Was it the tires or wheel bearings?? Please report back as my car is on 99400kms and M/P expires May this year. Only done about 400kms with the car so far and noticed this slight humming noise yesterday on the N2

Get the car in before it expires and complain about the noise.. They should still sort it out before the MP expires

Hi Solo Man. Yesterday I removed the sump guard and the noise stoped (Picture below). Put it back on and the noise came back. The trouble is that I don’t know how to fix it as the pictures with the instructions that were posted here are no longer availabl.

Will have a look and see if that could be it! Your sump cover seems to be fiited wrong as i assume the front part of it should slide in above the bottom lip of the front bumper. Will also look for that when i remove the sump cover on mine and report back.

I had the covers off yesterday and noticed it is fixed to the chassis with 10 smallish screws (10mm head) and about 20 self tappers so it should not rattle. Also noticed a lot of plastic plugs in most of the holes in the aluminium sump guard. The sump guard definitely slides above the lip of the front bumper and is fixed with five self tappers.

In my case the noise was definitely coming from the sump guard as I removed it and the noise disappeared. I don’t understand why you thought my sump guard was fitted incorrectly as the front of my sump guard was tuck under the bottom lip. When you say aluminium sump guard are you referring to the black sump guard that goes underneath the the car or am I missing something?

On my car it is an aluminium sump guard (2016 F30 320d facelift) and the rest is cardboard or mixture of cardboard and plastic?? The aluminium is tucked in above the front bumper lip so as not to scoop air when driving
