My first F30 problem.

Hey guys - i know this is an old thread but any info from the guys that experienced this problem and possible fixes would be appreciated.

My 2013 F30 320i started experiencing the same issue about a month ago- "humming sound from front passenger side wheel over 100km/h". My vehicle went in 3 times to Autobahn Isando. They balanced the wheels, did a wheel alignment and confirmed that it was not the wheel bearing and finally insisted that the tyres were the cause.

My car needed rear tyres so I fitted the same brand tyres in front and moved the front tyres to the rear and the humming sound was still present with brand new tyres.

I took the car to Leo Haese Centurion and they also said they cannot find anything mechanically wrong and want me to bring the vehicle in again when some Regional Tech will be in to investigate the problem.

Anyone have any idea on the cause.

Thanx

Ok what you do is you take the car in when the regional tech comes with a copy of the slip of the tyres. Then you tell them you guys blamed tyres but now there are new tyres and the noise is still there. On my car the second time they actually fitted tyres from a new car to prove to me that it was my tyres. But before this, my first time it was a wheel bearing because after replacement the noise was gone.

My humming has gone away now and I know how to get it back again. What I have managed to figure out is that if I drive hard a specially cornering that cause the edges of the tyres to feather more than normal it brings back the humming noise. If I drive normal for a few 100km over time again the noise goes away. Wheel allingment might play a role if its not correct and cause the tyres to feather more than normal

Let us know what the results are after the regional tech had your car

The strange think is that when I received the car back from the dealership all 3 times the noise was gone. I then drove the car hard on a straight road to about 160km/h and the noise was back and then you heard it over 100-110km/h.

Wheel alignment and balancing have been done. I read up on another forum of a similar problem and it was related to the diff. Well will wait for the Regional tech now

Not sure exactly what humming you guys are experiencing, but it may well be the aircon pipe, and there's a service bulletin out for it. First thing I noticed in my car. Need to take it in when I can be bothered for them to perform the bulletin.

Let me know :)

During the last attempt by the dealership to sort the problem out they did mention that a cover under the wheel arch was causing a similar problem on a few other vehicles and that they adjusted something but after a day the humming/whirring sound was back

will mention this bulletin to them - thanx

Hey guys....Just joined today....I have a mSport 320d F30....currently has 22000km on it. I also have the same problem. They had the wheel bearing changed so they say(never actually got the invoice for it) and the problem was still there. So they say it is the tyres which have a buldge on each of them (front). I replaced the tyres and the noise is still there. Any positive results from anybody so far. Really disaapointed on the F30 so far....on the build quality....it really seems like you driving a car in the R200000.00 range or lower.

Sorry to hear Paven.

Aweful stories we hear about the F30 build quality. So many things can cause a whining/humming that comes from the front of the vehicle or from the suspension.

Mine has disapeared. Just to mention also something strange. After giving my kar a good wash and the go drive it the sound also disapeared. Very very strange thing. But for 2 months now the hum is completely gone. O don't know what to say or think of it. Had an engine mount replaced and Getting a steering spindle replaced and part order. Other than that no further problems actually. Better than my e90 I had that was more in the shop than driving it.

Morning guys......Thanks for the input. Really hope they figure this problem out and get it reloved/fixed.
Gona take it soon for them to get it checked again. I really hope they could build cars like my 325ci msport. That car was super. In the 4 years that i had the car I only replaced the water bottle.
This car has been to the dealer at least 10 times so far apart from the service and I only got it in August.

Took my car in today for the Regional Technical manager to inspect. We drove the car and he could clearly hear the humming/whirring sound from 120km/h and up.

He removed the beading from the left windscreen and test drove again but the noise was still there. I left the car with them now. He suggested removing some belly pan and testing and then change wheel bearings?

Hopefully my car gets sorted by the end of the day

So last week I was told that the belly pan was removed and the noise was gone and when they compared the belly pan to a new BMW 3 series on the floor they found that it had rubber grommets in areas where mine just had holes and this is causing wind to flow through and create the humming/whirring noise. They told me that the grommets would be ordered and fitted.

I was not convinced by this as the car was fine for more than a year and the noise only appeared a few months ago and the belly pan was not tampered with by anyone.

So this morning I go in to have the grommets fitted. Test drove the car and the noise is still there :argh: and the service adviser that Ive been dealing with who asked me to bring the car in today was conveniently not in :thumbdo:

I'm just pissed off now - Anyone has a contact e-mail address for someone at BMWSA instead of the general e-mail address available?? Its been 3 months with this problem now:bangdesk:

Thats not good. Well if the pan is removed and the sound is gone. Then it must be airflow over some panel or holes or something is loose. There are allot of plastic covers and stuff that connect to that Pan.

This is just my experience on the humming as per my previous posts..

Still 100% sure it's not the RFTs? The problem with the new suspension is that it will easily get out of alignment.. One little pothole or something and you need to re-do wheel alignment, cambers, etc..

If the RFT eventually wears unevenly you will have these ghastly noises.. When they lift the car on the ramps and drop it again the suspension goes and sits in one position and they test the car like that and everything is well.. until you throw the car around a few corners and it settled again to what it was when you booked it in.. The the noises are back..

Then again they also replaced my steering rack as I had knocking noises.. all in all with new RFTs (Conti's) and the new rack the car is fine again..

Now if only I could sort out the rattling sunroof shield.. :nonono:

I'm on my 2nd F30 now. The previous one was at 20k kms and I've had no such issues on 18s.
I'm now at 700 kms on the current one with 19s and now sound noises.
I did however send it back for a drivers door shutting like a 20 yr old Taz.
Hard and tinny. With some adjustments, it has a better vacuum seal.

By the way Iceman.... What wheels are those?

More and more horror stories coming out of BMW's reverse engineering these days, glad Im sticking to my e36 and e46 guns! I feel sorry for you guys who downgraded to the E90 and F30, it sure does leave a bitter taste in the mouth when you find out your favourite car manufacturer cannot build a quality reliable car or be able to fix 'em any more...

I still think runflat tyres are the biggest BS to come fitted to a modern BMW...

Gizmo out of so many f30's made there arent enought compliants and issues for you to make a statement like that. Every series has had many stories come out over the years and this is the norm....

I had endless problems with my e36(eletronics, speakers....etc) and e46(window regulator*5 and airbag sensors.... etc) and my e90 i just had sunroof issues, my f30 has not had an issue but its still young and i think its pretty well put together

Ill say this thou, my favorite was my e46 330i manual f/l individual, it was my one true love because it was perfect to me so i understand your view

Ive owned an e46 325i 2003, e90 325i 2009, and Now an F30 320d. I can say e46 was a well built car but it had its issues for example on my e46 the Diff was replaced twice. Clutch on 90 000km, water bottle, oil leaks at tappet cover, oil filter housing, lower control arm bushes at least 3 times under MP, alternator. Just to name a few I can remember. Had the e46 for 5years up to 170 000km

the e90 was an fxxxx up from the start for me. Thirst the gear changes so mechatronics was replaced. Then misfire at start up. Then again hunting after that and eventually the complete head was replaced. So I traded it in after only a year and a half on +/-70000km.

F30 I have for a year now

first issue is the humming and they replaced the wheel bearing twice and its not the cause. Till today I'm not sure what it was and was told tyres and they did put on New tyres and No noise to show me. But I now still have my old tyres on and no more noise it has mysteriously. dissappeared. Engine mount was replaced but that was making a funny noise and we found that the cause was somehow small little gravel stones got between the mounting cover and mount itself. And lastly a steering rack.

So I disagree with your statement and so far the F30 is giving me less problems than my e46 and definitely the e90. Only time will tell and don't be negative on a car that you have not owned at least for a year and know nothing about. If you see the amount of F30's on the road these days compared to the few problems there are to date ill say its a good car.

This is my experience thus far tacking all the facts into account so far
