So this is my first build thread. Have not really been active on the forum since my introduction thread when i initially posted about the car. https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=77154

Was planning to sell the car coz of my personal situation that i was in but my brother convinced me to keep the car and get it fixed properly. So this month got the car to gizmo and will hopefully post the updates on this thread as work is being done.

Thanks man. Still alot of work to be done, but really happy with Warrens work so far. Chatted with him 2 years ago once when @AdiS referred me and then spoke to him this month after 2 years to get the car to him. Will keep the thread updatet as work progresses.

I don't want to turn this into another Gizmo thread, but I love this. Too many mechanics rush to finish a job asap and don't worry about things like this.

Will pass on the message. Not sure if he has to remove the intake to replace the ccv. but pic below shows the overnight leak from the broken pipe still. He organizing the parts and will keep me posted on the replacement and I will keep you guys updated.

And 2 more problems found.

fender photo-2018-10-25-08-30-45_2451251698.jpg

Cheap wheel arch line was used previously, gaps in the installation. Gizmo recommended we change it to OEM so not to allow water to enter.

duct photo-2018-10-25-08-31-50_7416551755.jpg

Front half of break duct missing. He going to see if he can find a replacement for just the missing half hopefully at the scrapyards, as dealer price is quite expensive.

cheers! i have seen youtube vids where they remove a few things like DISA, idle control valve etc to replace CCV pipes and all that. but i believe the correct way is to remove the intake completely.

BUT, when you remove the intake, they all recommend that you get the starter looked at, and the plastic water hoses that run along the side of the head... so yeah, becomes more expensive.

let us know how it goes

Honestly, I have not been to mechanic before that was this meticulous about his work on my car. For a first time gizmo client, I found him professional, and very easy to deal with. Not bad mouthing other mechanics. Just saying that so far I am quite happy with gizmo. Only regret is not getting the car to him 2 years ago, but as mentioned before, had personal situations to take care of at the time.

Moving on. I Have a long post coming up on the mirror repair. As mentioned in my introduction thread the right mirror came broken off with the car... to be continued....

My story of the mirror. ( lots of pics )
I did post previously but incorporating it into this thread.
https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/showthread.php?tid=78241

So, bought the car with the right mirror broken off, so thought to myself, hey this can't be that much of a pain to sort out. Boy was I wrong, like with many of the other faults that came with the car :dunnoanymore:

mirror 1_6125852586.jpg

mirror 2_5645714281.jpg
mirror 3_9591426118.jpg
mirror 4_8925319518.jpg

So thats how the Mirror looked.

mirror cable tie driving_5125700342.jpg

Initially in 2016 used a cable tie hack to keep the mirror on so I could drive the car safely.

So then started attempting to get the mirror repaired as replacement mirror from dealers was crazy prices. I mean crazy crazy. So i started hunting around all the scrapyards I could find. They all wanted around the same price R3500.00 but could not find the ribbon cable ones. Finally managed to get one from Ebay for around R1500 but cant remember the courier costs. Also no ribbon connector but thought that I could attempt to repair the cable on the ribbon connector and transfer the repaired motor into the replacement housing mirror.

mirror screwed repair 9a6a030659bf1de1035871f5938705ce_3443516730.jpg

Stripped the old mirror down and had the engineers bolt the parts together. Could no longer fold but done the job for temp situation.

Then the fun begins.
Below are all the pics of the replacement ebay mirror, When I stripped that mirror, there was rust and spiderwebs and whatnot inside. Spend many many many hours cleaning, sanding, boiling in vinegar, dipping in a acid solution, till I got the results I wanted. Shiny again. I know its only inside the mirror but wanted it clean. So then started on the old ribbon motor cable. Tried mutiple solution, copper tape, glue. Finally had a friend with a cellphone repair shop that soldered cable onto the ribbon cable and connectors. Small crack on the motor, had that fixed as well. Connected the motor to the car, and great news it worked. So began installing the motor in the ebay housing. Was not a 100% fit so modified the motor plastic housing to make it fit 100%. Tried to seal the soldered points with epoxy and I think thats where I messed up. No longer working. So i packed everything in a box out of frustration of spending so many hours and put the Ebay mirror back on with the ebay motor back on the car and sent the car to gizmo. No connections so manual adjustments till I try again with a new idea that I have in my head. Just waiting for the connectors to come from gearbest, which should sort out the joining of the ribbon cable. Hope it works, otherwise have to sell the ebay mirror as it should work 100% with other e46 coupe / vert vehicles that have the normal connectors and start my hunt again for a ribbon connector mirror.

So after I messed up on the connection , I figured I could pull the whole ribbon cable out of the connectors and order new wires from Gearbest with connectors on them. It doesnt really make sense now but I have the plan in my head. Will attempt again once they arrive or if im lucky, will just get a whole new mirror, with housing, motor and ribbon connectors.

Thanks man. But too much time has been spent on 1 mirror :dunnoanymore:
Started working on the mirror in Nov 2016. Its now Dec 2018 and still haven't completely succeeded. Everytime I get frustrated, I pack it away and try again a later time. Hopefully by Nov 2019 I should be done with the mirror :smilebounce:
