My 320d is leaking...WTF?!

So this morning I decided to give my lady (whom I've not even had for a week) a wash since she was a bit dirty after yesterdays trip.

...to my horror this was the unexpected sight I encountered after the wash: :thumbdo::argh::cry::nonono:

As the photos show, the leak is not just by one of the front pillars but both! I'm not sure how this would even happen so I can only assume it's a factory defect....unless the windshield was replaced at some point in the past and whoever did it did a piss poor job? I thought it might be a dodgy sunroof issue but there's no sign of wetness around the sunroof.

I'm sure everyone will agreed that this is completely unacceptable so needless to say I'm absolutely livid right now. I will be visiting the dealership first thing tomorrow morning once I've mailed them these photos.

I'm honestly not sure to deal with this because I really love the car but I feel the vehicle is compromised (once a leak, always a leak) so I'm curious to know how BMW will try to "fix" this (not to mention removing the stains from the interior) so I'm actually in the mood to demand a replacement vehicle....a real s**t situation to be in.

Eish boet.!!! Not acceptable at all. They just don't build them the same anymore. Hope you get it sorted ASAP

they must have washed it at the dealer prior to you taking delivery. Were there no leaks then?

Demand a new car for what may be just a roof gutter clogged?

I would! There isn't suppose to be water in a car ever! And that leak could cause extra issues down the line after the deal can't be reversed anymore.

I agree with the above, demand a NEW car - they can sort this one out and take a knock in the slight drop in value!

Could be that the water got in around the sunroof?

Either way, really sorry to see this!! :thumbdo:

OK do not panic, just yet...

The vehicle may not be compromised.

CHeck for windscreen leaks, if so, find out why the windscreen was changed, and was a genuine component used.

If it was changed, did they change the rubbers, or reuse the old one.

However, what I suspect the issue could be is that the sunroof drain pipes might be blocked, and as such.

Find out why.

1. CHECK FOR HAIL DAMAGE !!!!! This car could have a new roof and dome rails, if so, then its compromised, and demand a new car.

2. Check drain pipes, and if they are blocked, why, it could be something logical.

3. Check motorplan history, and if nothing is disclosed, take the car past a decent panel beater to check for signs of overspray/work and if it is not on motorplan, demand a new car.

4. If it is just something stupid, and they can fix it, demand a new roof liner at the very least, those water marks will not come out...

But I am pretty sure its the drain plugs

I was wondering when someone was going to ask the obvious....Yes the doors were properly closed. I'm not a noob when it comes to washing cars. Been doing it for years. I'm man enough to admit when I've made a f**k up...but this wasn't on me.

Actually I would've been relieved if it was my mistake then at least I'll know there's nothing wrong with the car.

Thanks for the "checklist" zaleonardz@DentDocVPS.

- No visible signs of hail damage
- I cannot find any visible evidence that the windscreen was replaced but then again I don't know what exactly to look out for. How would I properly test the windscreen for leaks? Just turn on the hose pipe and go at it again?
- You refer to sunroof drainage pipes...where exactly would I find these?

Holy crap. What an unfortunate and very unusual mess.

Good move to dealer the car asap.

I am trying to think where and how the hell would water get in through the side roof.

I assume this car is spanking, brand new; off the showroom?

From your initial post, it may seem the vehicle was purchased new, hence the numerous posts suggesting you demand a new vehicle.

I would also say it looks to be a clogged sunroof drainage pipe as I've seen this before on Land Rovers.
Not sure where about the pipe exits on the F30 though.
Hope it gets sorted to satisfaction.

Thanks okes. I also hope this issue gets resolved quickly and amicably. I don't want to be an a-hole about this but I think I must stick to my guns here.

Even if the source of the problem is as "simple" as a clogged sunroof drainage pipe, the roof lining replacement is a major concern for me. I can't imagine that it's an easy or quick job and I assume it would involve the removal of panels, trim pieces etc. meaning my car could come back as a rattlebox.

I've also heard plenty of horror stories about people getting their roof linings replaced only to have it come lose after a few months.

If the sunroof drainage cloggage is an issue on the F30 one would think that when the technicians/mechanics do the PDI it would be part of their checklist.

I think I'm well within my rights to insist on a replacement vehicle with the same spec.

Untrue on the rattle box,

If it is done correctly, removing and replacing a roof liner is pretty easy,

Could do one on an f30 in about 1.5 hours remove and refit.

But if they do, check specifically for lines and damaged corners on the new panel. They sometimes put it in scew/butchers it while installing,

Just a quick update. I took my ride back to the dealership yesterday morning and they came back to me confirming that there was indeed a problem with the drain channels for the sunroof and that is has been resolved.

This is all good and well but the mechanics/technicians must tell me if this is a factory/production flaw and if it's now fixed for good because I don't want to encounter the same problem down the line when I'm washing the car or if I'm caught in a major downpour.

For my own peace of mind I need some sort of guarantee that I won't experience this problem ever again.
