Motorplan extension and alternatives

What are the recommended options instead of extending ones Motor plan? I have a 2012 F20 120d and do quite high mileage, approx 30k pa, and if I spent the R25-30k quoted for an extra 20 000 k/12mths it would be done in no time. I still have MP until February 2017 and car is on 68 000km. Bought second hand 4 months ago- no comments on MP. BMW replaced the cat at the last service as it was making a noise.

Just can't justify the cost of extending but not sure what to do..

+1, would like to know if there are any alternatives, BMW like to give you a mini heart attack with the prices of MP extensions.

I was glad I extended mine, got full brake discs/pads, new battery, normal service, valve clearance AND new cams/followers right at the end of the extension…
Was well worth it.
That being said, your experience may vary.
On a turbo car I'd say extend but due to your extensive kms, perhaps just look at a 3rd party warranty.

At 68000km you should be able to extend by time only(which is much cheaper), this is provided you are below 80000km by the time renewal is available. You can renew within 6 months of expiry, so you should be able to get a quote by September and make a decision then.

Worthwhile alternative would be Innovations extended warranty option which covers drive train 100% and relevant limitations on components, this will cover you for 2 years/200 000km(IIRC). To qualify for this option though, your car needs to be less than 5 years old and on a current manufacturers warranty.

unfortunately the motorplan thingy rules out all turbo bmws for me...i would love a 135i or 335i ..even a 320i but would never buy 1 out of motorplan.

Get an aftermarket warranty. They will cover most items but you must just make sure you service the car regularly as per manufactures recommendations.
For example, Motormend will give unlimited cover for 24 months or up to 250000km on engine, transmission, drivetrain, suspension, etc if you join them just after your motorplan expires. The premium depends on the vehicle and mileage but I pay around R200/month for the wife's Cooper S.
But shop around for a warranty that will suite your needs. And also get on to Hello Peter to see if there are any regular complaints on that warranty.

i own a Range Rover so this may not make sense but i was just too scared to buy a turbo BMW..i was scared that the turbos would go etc. i try to operate without debt & i really am not keen to spend like R15k etc. on little things on a car..a lot of guys are fine with spending money like that here or there if something breaks but it would piss me off. i know some guys have good experiences with 35's but i know for some it has been a very expensive exercise. I also know that there have been many 320i's needing new turbos

The example that I mentioned is unlimited on certain major components if you sign up immediately after your motorplan expires. Yes this does not include wear and tear components.

I spent 12k on motorplan extension last year January. Since then to now, head, block, turbo charge pipe, discs and shocks front, front shocks, water pump and a couple other things got replaced. Engine and turbo alone would have cost 210k so I reckon my MP extension worked out for me.

You definitely got more than your monies worth on that MP extension!! You should be sorted going forward now, almost everything is new!

I am getting close to the end of my plan, also leaning towards extending the plan for another year. But the price to extend is craxy!

After my ordeal with BMWSA, I would rather buy a BMW that already has its MP run out. This way I save on the purchase price and most of its depreciation would have already taken place. Then put the saving from the purchase price into a safe place where I can gain interest, and be covered if big ticket items goes. The small stuff I will DIY.

This of course would not be on a x35i or M car, but rather a 330d

i hear you but ja it seems thats we are having some issues with the newer BMs..that 330d would have to be manual too. i mean the water pump thermo thing might not seem like a big issue but i don't want to pay R5k - 7k for that when it goes on the e90..auto trannies..bearings etc. its a lot to think about. my 330i's were a dream...low maintenance costs & reliable as hell..im thinking of how i can stick with the brand & all i can think of is probably selling my HKS Datto Coupe when its done & building an e30 coupe (only coupe!) with e36 //M parts..i would then have to do the bearings. i think thats the only way for me to go forward with BMW. As you can tell I'm disappointed in the brand at the moment...love the cars but they seem to be problematic.

Based on your perspective, you would have to rule out all turbocharged BMWs, you should also rule out all ///M's due to either vanos, smg, bearings, you should also exclude most 6 cylinders due to vanos as all these things do wear.

Doesnt leave you with much options.

I dont know much about Range Rovers, but how is it different from BMW and motorplan?
