My car is a Daily a Driver, so I prefer the Auto box, but 90% of the time I drive it in Sport and use the paddles, so I still control the gear changes and they are instant!
My only criticism is that we need a big number higher up on the speedo cluster to see exactly what gear we in.

Manuals show who are fast drivers while autos make any driver fast

I wanna see any driver shift faster than the new 8 spd auto. :biglol:

Yip...me too!

The statment itself explains autos will make anyone fast. Not disputing it. When one removes most of the control aspect of changing gears. Reduced shift times an points one can focus on other aspects of driving. You still cant do the tricks a manual will allow an removes the fun factor.

As other users have said auto has its place.

This s raging debate that is becoming more convoluted due to the "second car".
i feel the same way, the daily commute is brilliant with an auto, especially if you have paddles (I feel it is a must if you have an auto), but for the fun factor, manual is just so much better for me personally.

I have raced DCT's and have raced step-auto's, and with my manual box I can often outlaunch them and stay ahead.
Rolling runs, I found when I raced a DCT, that yes, the shifts are quicker but it made for null because in 4th gear I would start pulling away.
If you want a supremely quick car, auto is NEEDED, but I am talking 10seconds cars.
But nothing beats being able to miss a gear and lose a race because of you. Ha! Ha!

I have 8 speed auto on my 125i and Dual clutch on my M3.
I wouldn't have it any other way. I find the peddles to be sufficiently ivolving.

The steady march of time, fellas; who wants a PS1 still!!

Has anyone wondered why what is often referred to as "The Best driving cars in the world" are 90%+ manual from say the 90's up until present?
Why when BMW have an international advert displaying the ///M4 as a drivers car, they use a manual?

As they say, a straight road doesn't make for a skilled driver

I absolutely love my dct but there isn't a day that goes by when I don't wish I had a 6MT just for the extra fun and ability to do tricks

MANUAL!!

Even big luxury barges would be so cool if a manual was available....... e38 740i individual 6 speed manual [wink wink]

If the CSL was a normal manual, they would have had to gouge the keys from my clenching cold dead fingers.

I've always loved the involvement of a manual gearbox. There's just something about shifting the gear lever into place with that nice "click" lol.

That said, for a daily commute auto is great, especially in traffic. Also, I think auto suits diesel motors perfectly due to the lack of rev range.

Have to agree with you here.
Although, one of the quickest 30d's I know is......manual.
