happened with a gti here at menlyn vw in pretoria, apparently there was a tracking device on it and was traced to a garage in a block of flats in sunnyside

if i recall it was a metro cop or saps cop involved:nonono:

Colin, what happened with the incident you are talking about was this... and I know, cause it was one of our Metro Cops it happened to...

A guy was visitting the dealership for a few days in a row, checking out the GTi's. Finally asked the sales rep if he can take a test drive with the car. Rep gives keys to guy, and tells him to pull the car out while he signs the log at the gate, but the guy takes off with the car...

Later he goes to the block of flats where he stays, Andries and Jacob Mare streets, and tells the metro cop, he had bought the Golf, and needs a garage to park it in, and pays the cop R100 to use the garage at the flat for the night.

Suspecting nothing, the cop agrees, only to be surprised at gunpoint by the tracking company and the SAPS...

The metro cop was suspended, but after 22 months paid suspension, back at the office, but his friend was locked up, given 5 years for steeling a car.

Now, concerning the post... it does indeed happen allot more than what we hear about...
I know for a fact, that last year, while offloading cars at Leo Haese Hatfield, 3 bmw's got nicked!! A new 1 series, a two 3 series.
A few months earlier, before the launch of the F30, a 335i was stolen from inside the dealership...

So yea, it happens... :thumbdo:

makes me wonder if this is happening more often than we think (or know) what are the dealerships doing to curb this or...

is it a matter of sales. The money paid by the insurance company is considered a sale and income for the dealership, thus boosting figures

Do you folks know how many times the depot's where the vehicles are stored are held up.

I know of 4 separate occasions where heavily armed men entered a depot I was working for in Kaalfontein at 4am, over-powered guards with guns, took hostages, and practically drove out with a multitude of vehicles.

Anybody hear about this?

BMW Northcliff were offloading off the truck, before cars hit the floor 2 335i's pull up and take the M5, owner chased with X5M, 335i's blocked him let the M5 go, then they spilt up on highway and dissapeared.

anyone got news on this?

When exactly did this happen?

My company had one stolen on 24 Jan this year from Northcliff.

Geez guys but you watch too many movies eh? :roflol:

1. The car is in Transport Mode, not Valet, Transport mode. This means it cant rev more than 3k and doesnt allow full throttle, only partial.

2. The cars electronics are de-actived. No wipers, lights, guages, aircon, radio, nothing.

3. The cars are shipped with literally 500ml Fuel. Its not unheard of for a car to drive off the truck and run out of fuel on it way up to the workshop.

4. Both keys are transported together, one in the boot and the other with the driver of the truck. The keys are also deactivated, cars can only be open and closed by using the actual metal key within the standard key. The boot is locked as per transport mode, only a dealer can de-activate it to access the spare, carpets, trim pieces and User Manual etc.

Anyone who tried to steal a car off a car carrier is an idiot. Rather steal it once its been PDI'ed, Transport Mode de-activated and is on its way to the petrol station for a full tank as per BMW's customer sales requirements...

Thats how several C63 AMG's have been stolen in JHB, and yes... There they do block the car with two cars, put a gun to your head and ask you to step out before taking the car and leaving you there.

Happened to a mate of mine. :thumbdo:

Mike

This is not completely true.

I work for a motor ferry company and when most of the cars come in they are out of transport mode and ready to be driven as normal, as for the BMW all that is different with them is they have a seal on the boot to ensure the repair kit, jack, carpets, books and manuals doesnt get stolen and that gets checked when it comes into our yard and when it leaves.

Yes it does only have a limited amount of fuel in but not only 500 ml it is more like 5 liters of fuel.

Most of the carrier companies have marked some of the dealers as high risk zones and gets a armed escort for some support at the dealers.

It does happen more often than the general public thinks but mostly we get the cars back within a few days or so, but the high end cars are not attempted that much as say the taxi style mini buses.

Not as of yet no.

I know it got jacked on the 24th of Jan and the driver got pulled out of the car.

Will see if I can get any details on it and so. What I do know it was a white M5.

Okay some info.

Was only one 3 series that was the getaway car, then most of the high end special cars like the M series gets put into transport mode but that specific one wasn`t, apparently the owner was there waiting for his car as well.

The M got snapped on a speed trap doing 95 in a 60 zone and the metro that chased after it lost in in Melverne after it went over 150 - 160 km/h

Question: Does it affect the car's history if its stolen and recovered before registration?

its a good question, but i think it will dont really think they will have a choice not but to put it up there as stolen and recovered, then they also wont get there money for it, i would think so nxt time theres a beeeeeg discount on a brand new M5 lol you know why

I think it will be put up as stolen / recovered - If there was a claim made against it (Dealer Insurance) then the VIN number would get logged :fencelook: I could be wrong

Spoke to our Security officer about it, he said they do yes, but it seems they are letting it slip with the more common ones seeing as they are in high demand on the road, the M series are more valuable and exquisite.
