:argh: FFS, hate to see any M car in this state but its the reality of what lengths people would go to on these cars to save a buck

Yesterday I stripped the throttles off the engine.
Bolts were tightened 4 knuckles white.
Pics to follow later tonight.

Zayd was able to get me a vanos body which I will use to rebuild and transfer the internals from his old one with the stripped thread.

I did not take a pic of it as it came in however here is a pic of it after having cleaned it.
You can see his damaged unit in the background.

Mounted the front bracket with all the bolts........only took a few minutes longer than just putting in one bolt.

Throttles after just 2 cleans.
More cleaning tomorrow.

.....and just a pic of the head with the old gaskets still on.....

The pictures of the vanos housing as I picked it up ...

Still looks clean in these pictures. In reality it was a different story ....

Had to take the water pump off so that the 2 stuck bolts could be removed.
So it is off to the engineers along with the starter.

Vanos unit is on.

Had to do inserts on the cam box as we had some stripped threads which would lead to valve cover oil leaks.

My word she was in bad shape.
When you done the owner is going to be so chuffed. Going to feel like a new car. [THUMBS UP SIGN]

What type of inserts did you use on the Alu head? Can the faster heating up and slower cooling of the insert affect its host?

Great work btw

No way Ashlin
They are special inserts made by wurth in aluminium and one needs special tools to insert them.
One also needs to countersink the hole with a special tool for the insert to seat itself properly.
The man charges R200 per insert up to 8mm and R400 for bigger sizes to 12mm.....

Thank you , was just curious about different metal properties, but that has been cleared up.

This Dakar Yellow car belongs to a new fanatic and has come in for tidying up purposes.

I shall finish tidying up a few issues and it will then go to Gizmo to have the clutch and rear main oil seal checked out.

444YYY was kind enough to read codes for us as our INPA does not speak 1994 ZA build M3s and we found 11 faults.

3 of them crucial enough to stop the car from performing like a 325 let alone an M3.

Below a few pics of what was found.

The tensioner pulley....well what remains of the tensioner pulley

Wrong fan blade

Wrong bolts on the water pump pulley which will lead to complications as a 32 spanner is not made that thin as to fit in the diminished space.
We will likely have to grind the heads so as to fit it in to release the viscous

Note how the bottom radiator hose has swelled and how the incorrect serpentine belt is being used "being a 5 rib belt instead of the normal 6 rib"

Leaking PS hoses.

On the viscous release I had to grind my spanner down to bmw tool spec thickness to get in there... I dont think any std spanner fits the e30's viscous. Dont have any experience on the others.

On all the newer cars the standard slimline 32 spanner fits comfortably.
I have forgotten what the e30 spacing is like although I recall on my partners 1991 318i I was able to use the Gedore slimline spanner.

In addition we bought an HVAC control unit a speedometer cluster a right hand window as well as an airbox from StephenT.

We might also install an AC Schnitzer suspension depending on a few things.

May I ask why ACS? Afaik ACS springs are manufactured by eibach. Haven't a clue about their shocks but they probably don't make them either?

Basically why pay premium for a car off MP?

Bilstein shocks and eibach springs tuned to Schnitzer specs and stamped ACS

Yeah so is the ACS tuning of the suspension really that much better than the ones who manufacture the stuff ?

ACS would have been specific as to spring rate and shock valving for their set.

So would it be better I guess not in terms of quality but yes in terms of matching.
