M3 s50b30 with a severe dose of "mechanic abuse"

If the throttle cable is going to be replaced, a better routing is behind that black plastic at the back of the engine bay... Apparently it was a recall back in the day....
The advantage is that the 'U' bend in the cable is not so sharp, and the throttle pedal is less stiff.

Idle control valve unsupported as the rubber support is broken

A close up fwiw

New PS return line

Unsupported fuel hard lines.
Notice the red vacuum line underneath.....factory standard is a thick black line heat resistant.

Notice how teh fuel line hose clamp has been placed on the fuel rail.
I wonder how they did that :)

Wow, I dont know a lot about cars, but I can see that this M3 is in need of some TLC.

For the N00b members out there: for a project like this, what would the turn around time be to get this car back to "normal"?

It really depends on your bank balance I guess.

I did a bit of stripping today and was able to establish that the gearbox is missing 5 bolts on the left hand side.
What struck me is the fact that the people who did the clutch replacement on this car work in a BMW dealership as "mechanics".
That really is peculiar.......so much for "full dealer history"

Pics in a moment.

Note the long bolt through the top of the starter.
That is a cylinder head bolt and the starter threads were stripped from previous "mechanics".
The most recent ones just threw a bolt at the starter and did not even bother to place a nut on the backend of it.
Bottom starter bolt was loose due to the fact that the threads were stripped and remnants are still on the bolt.....must take a pic of it.

Started cleaning so that assembly may proceed.

Great thread.

Just shows that sometimes you never know what you buying until it gets into expert hands.

I've been considering getting an e36 M3, after this thread, im not so sure anymore.

I have only driven 1 clean e36 M3 belonging to 444YYY and I must say that it is delightfull car when in full song.

The e46s are nice but for raw M feel nothing touches the e36.......quirky as it is.

If you are seriously looking to buy one give me a shout and I shall tell you what to look for.......btw reduce the asking price by R10k for immediate engine work besides the other things that may require attention.

Agree his one is super clean, doubt I will find one in that condition. Quirky, yes, but there is just something about that S50.

The idea was for you to do an inspection before hand anyway. I just havent told you yet.

Great work saving this M3.

One day the M Coupe will come visit for shims and lifters... suspect those pics will look somewhat better than these though.
