If have a turbo'ed bmw I would say that it is useful to extend the motorplan but for the N/A ones I am not to sure.

Just make sure that you service your car regularly (10000-12000km), make sure you run good oil, don't let the car overheat, ever, and take good care of your bmw and it will take good care of you.

Edit: And remember, you are paying for everything even if its the motorplan that came with the car new. I wonder what the price of a new BMW would be it you didn't ahve to pay for and get a motor plan?

I would say that any 4 pot or straight 6'er would give you years of great driving long after M/P runs out. Just a look on the road to the older models still going strong backs up the argument of well built Beemers that last. Any turbo model, especially on the highveldt may be a bit of a lotto - although the newer engines have improved the reliability in that the turbo should last lifetime of the engine.

Most Beemer owners do tend to drive them harder than the other car makes, so the fact that they last so long is testament to the great build quality! Problem is these days most people get bored after 3/4 years of same car, piston envy i call it

I suppose one can never know with any degree of certainty when something will go, a gearbox, clutch, etc, so the motor plan is great when that happens but I can understand those who don't feel like spending the money for something that may or may not happen anyway. But it's similar to insurance. You pay a monthly premium and you may never be involved in an accident, but it's there for extra support in the event that something does happen. Life is very unpredictable, that's all I know.

Congrats on a very informative site.

I am interested in buying a 2006 E90 330i with 93000km. The vehicle is in good condition. i am considering extending the motorplan for another 20000kms and have been quoted R24k - Is this worth it?

I am concerned about something big (clutch, gearbox etc) being replaced after motorplan has expired. Any idea on cost of such items and the probability of those items being replaced out of motorplan?

note u must ask for year extension & NOT mileage extension on m/plan so the quote will def be cheaper But long as u dont do alot a travelling

The motorplan on this vehicle expires in March 2011..hence the 24k for another 20 000 km's and 1 year. The vehicle has been serviced and looked after nicely. It has had a clutch replaced at about 70 000 km's.

I am concerned that the clutch may go bust after March 2011.

Any suggestions?

I bought my E90 this year May with an extended motor plan for additional
10 000km for R7000. I hit the stealer's for R15000 worth of repairs so far. :excited:

Changed: Wishbones, water pump, diff bushers, wiper blades, light bulbs.

Just be a bit technical with them and they will change whatever you need.

Just to clear something up. There are two types of Motorplan extensions available from BMW SA on all BMW's. Firstly the very expensive extension to mileage: This is where the user has passed the 100 000 KM standard warranty mileage and would like to extent for say another 20 000 KM. These prices are usually well into the R20K region on even the standard 320 E90 cars going right up as the model numbers increase. Secondly is the extension to years. This is quite a bit cheaper. Case-in-point is my 320D 2006 which had only 51 000 KM's on the clock when I bought last month. Set to expire in June 2011 I asked to extend for a further 2 years at a total cost of R14K.

So my point is don't be fooled into buying an extended Motorplan on mileage if you are well below the 100 000 KM mark as you are getting raped. At least BMW was kind enough to tell me this; with Audi (I previously owned a new model TT) was almost bought the full 20 000 KM extension when I had only 57 000 KM on the odo.

I was just quoted R11000 to extend motor plan by 10000 km for my E90 2005 320i. Is that a rip off or normal price ? It's already been extended to 2012 and I've got 81980 km on at the moment but I like to know I have complete peace of mind that everything will be covered. So just need to know if SMG are ripping me off or if I should get a quote somewhere else (or even if I'm allowed to get a quote at another dealer). Thanks.

To extend the car by 20000 km starts to get a little rough. Almost R20k. Ouch.

Edit : I just saw Akash was quoted R7000 for 10000km also for an E90 so then I am being ripped off !?! Is that price including vat ?

the m plan depends on various factors incl age and mileage
the earlier u extend the cheaper it will be

i got a quote to extend mine in jan - 1 year 5000km = 9k
got a qoute in may i think - the minimum was to to extend 1 year and 15000km = 25k or something ridiculous

it was a 04 325ci by the way

Thanks for your reply ! Didn't know that age would have an effect on the pricing. There is a big difference in pricing from R7000-11000. Perhaps SMG in Century City charges more for some reason compared to other dealers. I have no idea. As long as the pricing remains fair and reasonable for the added km's.

i reckon its gonna be the same similiar

I've had my time extended. I don't drive like crazy. I do around 1300 km a month roughly. So by the time I've reached 100000 km it would have been almost end of 2011. Then I've got until September 2012. But now if I extend by another 10000 km that means that I'll be safe even after September. So then would that mean that my motor plan falls away entirely even if the km's are still within range because I've reached the time limit ? Not sure how these things work.

mplan expires when you reach the time or km limit set in your contract... whichever comes first

your quotes should be the same, no matter what dealer you go to, as the mplan cover is from BMW SA, not a dealership

Let me ask you something then. Once the motor plan expires, what can one do ? Does BMW have an additional warranty extension plan ? Another motor plan service ? Or is that it ? Because I may not sell the car in 2 years time or I might, who knows, but what I do know is that if I don't sell I don't want to worry about paying ridiculous amounts of money on replacement parts.

after m/plan bmw can offer you a tub of vaseline, nothing else
you should get more if you sell privately and still have active m/plan

Or as in my case, search for aftermarket motorplan and warranty providers, and speak to the finance company too. Our 320 is out of motorplan and is now covered under a warranty from ABSA, and a maintenance plan under SA Warranties.

Also remember once your motorplan has lapsed with BMW, you can't go back on it. You HAVE to extend whilst you're still in motorplan.

I'm mostly relying on prayer, the aftermarket providers, and good contacts to cope with any potential major threats.
