I have the same tappet noise, and I think it got a little louder when I did the oil change, can it be? I did flush it, maybe that made it louder...?

I would like to get some of that additive Mike@LiquidMoly sent you the info on, looks like a plus to mix that with oil.

Gonna get my tappets looked at by my girlfriends dad next week, hope he can sort the problem out, I'll let you know if he finds anything...

I've heard a few e30 with the same sound, think its happy tappets...

Well mine has a new think, when its cold and I drove her little hard the previous day, she farts out a nice ball of smoke when I start her...?
Prob some oil getting in somewhere...

My 540i does that as well, its the valve guide seals that are either on their way out or gone already. When your car is stopped a bit of oil is seeping past the seals and into the cylinder, thats why you will get that puff of smoke initially, but nothing else while driving.

I just booked my car for Tuesday. Their going to do a oil pressure test and pull the tapped cover to see what they can see.

The guy also said that he also don't think it's lifters or tappets. Lets hope they can find the problem.

I remember there was a guy on the E30 forum that said the only he could get his engine be nice and quiet was to get a recon head and replace everything new (rockers, lifter, valves, ect). Lets hope Disa Auto Server (Who done the head beginning of the year) didn't do such a terrible job.

So the oil pressure is good and they can't see anything funny under the tappet cover. They did however found that the bracket that holds the aircon pump had a loos bolt. It was making this "Grrrrrrrrrr" vibration on certain revs. I was looking for the cause for many weekends and simply could see the problem. So the mechie checked all the bolts and nuts of the aircon pump, power steering pump, and alternator.

If this loose bolt was the cause for weird noise I got I don't know as it hasn't been very cold lately.

All seems fine though and so I'll just keep driving and keep an eye on everything.

It really feels so much better now that the "Grrrrrr" effect is gone. I can't tell you what a difference it makes.
