Was a bit late for work, so I just got out quickly and recorded.

Anyway, the car is going in tonight so they car start it tomorrow morning and hopefully find what be making the noise.

Well... predictably... they started the car this morning and there was no noise. So I'm still NOWHERE with regards to that. :cursin:

Maybe I should just sell it... :bawling:

No man, did they drive it a little?

Won't make a difference. If you start the car at say 10AM... no noise. Start it at 8AM on a nice cold morning and there is noise.

I started the car on Saturday afternoon after it has been standing since Friday after work and there was no noise. This ONLY happens when it's cold. If it's not cold enough, there's no noise.

Nicholas, I think you should advance the clock in your car by two hours. Thus if you start it up at 8, the car will think it's 10 already. Hey Presto, no more noise!

Just kidding bro. Stupid bloody Murphy's Law. Must be driving you nuts.

haha... maybe I should try that. Although the clock can only be adjusted one minute at a time... that means I have to sit there and press the + button 120 times :nono:

Anyway, I just went to collect the car and I know they washed it for me. So I was kinda expecting them to charge me something, but the foreman said that I owed nothing as they didn't do any actual work. They only checked or tried to check everything.

So all impressed I thanked the man and got in the car and then noticed that they also cleaned it on the inside. Vacuumed even!

So although they couldn't do anything thanks to the noise not showing is ugly head this morning... I am impressed with there service and I'll go there again.

It could be hydraulic lifters... If you want I can supply you with an additive that will get rid of the sound...

I think a mixture of thick oil, cold temperature and age may be the cause here... Tell me... Does the car make the sound for more or less 30 or so seconds after startup?

It only happens every now and then. It hasn't done it once this week. Also, the lifter are new since beginning of the year. I've had to replace the lifters twice already and I know this is not a lifter noise. Auto Works did tune one of the fan belts which I think they said was to tight or something, But I've never heard a fan belt make the noise that is in the clip.

The noise also don't always sound the same. At first it was a sort of cluttering/knocking noise and then last week I got that you heard in the clip.

For now I'm just gonna keep on going and check it every morning to see if it will do it again.

What is the additive? How does it work and how much does it cost? I'm asking cos the engine can actually be a little quieter.

Thanks

I'm starting to wonder if it might not be the aircon pump. As the aircon system has no gas, I'm thinking it might be years since the pump actually worked. I'm going to disconnect it and see if there is a difference.

Just went for lunch and the car decided that it's going to make the noise all the time now. It's changed from a light knocking to a more of a tappet noise, but it's not a "clicking" noise... it's more like "Tapping" (Tap tap tap).

So I got home and opened the bonnet. Looked around a bit and I found that it only does it once you bring the revs up from idling... weird I thought. Then something caught my eye. There was oil coming out from the top of the oil filter housing right around the bolt that suppose to hold it all in place. It was only a little bit, but you can see it coming out.

So then I checked my oil level and what do you know... it's half between full and minimum. I checked the oil a few times over the last few weeks and it always seemed fine. Last time I checked was maybe about 2 weeks ago.

Anyway, I got out a socket and took out the bolt that hold the oil filter in place. Took a close look and then I noticed there are 2 washers on it. This is wrong for those who might be wondering. They were stuck together, so it's no wonder I didn't notice it when I did the service about 2 months back. So after removing the one washer, I cleaned the lid a little, put everything back together, then started the car to see if it still leaks. No leaks thus far.

Then I went and got some oil to top up and I have to say it's not sounding much better. I'll take a closer look tonight to make sure when I have more time.

Nic, I should have met you earlier. I had an E30 318 coupe available with 55k on the clock that had front suspension damage, but the tngine, tranny and rest of the car were spotless... Wanted R10, but given away to the gardener...

Now I would have loved a car like that, hellas.

My car is old and it has it's fault. I paid a lot of money to have a lot of these faults fixed... but it's still not what it should be. I don't understand how these so called me-ken-niks can tell me: "No it's fine. All these engine to this or that...blah blah". Disa Auto service had the whole head in pieces beginning of the year and according to them everything else if fine now... right :slap:

Where this extra washer came from I have no idea. It's really thick too... anyway.

I am REALLY considering getting a E46, but then I get something I don't know and it will cost me. Currently my car works me out R700 a month including insurance. Petrol is about R400 for going to work and back and to the shops. A nice E46 would work out close to R2k a month without insurance and without petrol. So I don't know... maybe... I'll have to think about it.

I have the same tappet noise, and I think it got a little louder when I did the oil change, can it be? I did flush it, maybe that made it louder...?

I would like to get some of that additive Mike@LiquidMoly sent you the info on, looks like a plus to mix that with oil.

Gonna get my tappets looked at by my girlfriends dad next week, hope he can sort the problem out, I'll let you know if he finds anything...

I've heard a few e30 with the same sound, think its happy tappets...

Well mine has a new think, when its cold and I drove her little hard the previous day, she farts out a nice ball of smoke when I start her...?
Prob some oil getting in somewhere...

I would get a head gasket set and replace as many seals as possible before anything goes wrong. My car blew head gasket beginning of the year and since then everything has been going wrong.
