What bout the turbo clutchy ?

But I can understand that, you have spent SERIOUS bucks on your car(s) over the last few weeks, including aquiring 2 new ones, so I would be broke too :)

Hi All,

Ok some major progress this weekend.

Started off doing a inspection of all the pads and discs, and guess what, they are still in damm good shape, discs are fine, and about 60% left on the pads front and rear, so I just put them back. The break linings error came from a damaged pad sensor in the rear, so score another one for luck :p

I purchased the following :
Oil Filter - 195
Liqui Moly Engine Flush 49.50
Liqui Moly Radiator cleaner 58.50
8 x Bosch spark plugs 240
10 L of Liqui Moly long longtime High Tech LL04, Farking expenisve at 910
Castol Premium Anti Freeze 117
BMW Pad sensor 125

So total was R1695

Also got some caliper dust plugs, and some screws and clips that were missing.

Car is standing on four tressels, wheels completly off the ground, Rotated the tires as the fronts were not that hot, WTF cant people take their cars for alignment, seriously, its half a saturday morning, every few months, I dont get it .

BMW540087.jpg

Removing the pads is really easy, two bolts and your good, takes less then 5 min, but as said, I replaced my old ones
BMW540089.jpg

The oil change was also nothing to do, I LOVE that cansiter idea in front for the oil filter, makes the job dang easy. Added the engine cleaner, ran for about 15 minutes, drained the oil and refilled. She took about 6 to 7 litres, but I'll check her tomorrow. Oil wasnt bad, but it could of been better.

BMW540099.jpg

Spark plugs are really easy as well, covers off, coils off, plugs out, plugs in, covers on. One of the plugs were not firing properly, I now have again a V8 instead of a V7, car is running smoother now. Real easy when you have decent tools,

BMW540095.jpg

Then I figured, stuff it, I am going to do the gearbox (ZF 5HP30) oil change, I was worried about doing this one myself cause I am still a noob at this, and after running off the go buy the right hex spanners (the main filler is a 17 by the way) I proceeded to strip off the sump.

I followed the procedure as I posted http://www.e38.org/zf-5hp30-service.html

The exhaust was in the way of the drain plug, and I figured Im not going to move it, and since I am taking the sump off, I was going to loosen the sump from the front first, and turn it into a slide into a bucket. MESSY as hell withipping everywhere (I think it magically aims for your eye)

Battled getting the bolts off, and I broke 2 heads of my tools, 5 bolts were problematic, but the 11mm socket over them trick works well,

Got the sump down, oil wasnt THAT bad, but not that great either, black as the night, the magnet was clean, and there is no debris anywhere. Changing the filter 2 two screws, and if you buy the OEM filter, you get new screws, this was a damm easy job.

Replaced with OEM sump gasket, put it back, starting putting in oil, she took about 4.5L oil and then I had the first drip back. I started up and ran her a bit got the other 500ml in, but she wants more, and I am now out of oil.

BMW540096.jpg

So question, do I just go buy another 5L of the frikken expensive Shell LA 2634, and if so, where can I get it on a sunday, or can I top up with Transmax M, what would the effects be of mixing the two oils, is this wise ?

I am leaning towards buying the Shell, I would rather spend the money on the box and make sure its right, then do a box repair on it, she was singing a little bit in first gear with the existing oil, so I figured she was low, as we only got 4L out, and seeing that I have been so lucky with other repairs that should cost money, I can treat her a bit.

So do I mix Shell with Transmax M and save like 800 bucks, or do I be prudent and get the right stuff on monday ?

LZ

UPDATE : Added another 3 Litres of Dexron 3, box is no longer whining or jerking, although I plan to flush another 5 litres next month of the Mobil 1 ATF, and the month after another 5, then I will have all clean oil virtually

So ya, really good weekend

Next step on the car.

I am looking for an aggressive 5 spoke BMW set of mags, either a 16" or 17", ACS or similar.

If anyone has a set, please give me a shout with a pic

Bleh, after hitting 3 exhaust shops at 7:30, nobody can help me out with Cowley boxes, they can only help on monday.

Clutchy, how did you get around the slightly curved back box issue, or did you just put in two small boxes ? I dont know if I want the thing to sound like hell fire just yet, its going to be my daily driver for a while, so I think i should hit the noise boys in centurion on tuesday

Also went mag shopping this morning, bleh,

I reallly like the M parrelells, but I think i have a better chance of falling pregnant.

I found some M mags at electron scrapyard, but not a full set, two differant sets actually,

Guess I need to keep looking, there are some nice combinations from the E90 that came with the M suspension, now to find a decent set.

Oh well, guess we keep looking

dude mpar's are the SEX on E34's.. I'm gonna go with ACs' type III's tho, IMHO them and the mpars are the hottest wheels for the E34's by FAR. but that wheels Ant's bro has on his 520 are super hot also...

I choped the whole damn thing off, crosspipie, two big single freeflow boxes, its damn loud. I have it here at uber's house btw, u can come hear if u want.. but if daily drive, as some big silencers :) hehe.

we will chat tommorow, need to show u pics of my new interior ;)

So hit the exhaust shops again this morning, and no luck, so what I am going to do is just take the middle silencer out completly and leave the back one in place, back is still good,

Oh and I fixed those pesky headrests, gonna strip out the seat later to fix the twisting, that cable repair job is really easy once you have done one.

So clutchy phoned me and said I have a nasty leak of a red liquid while leaving Ubers place.

I suspected gearbox oil, but discovered its only power steering and a really easy fix (I did get a gearbox whine on the way home though, gonna run 5 litres of Transmax M through the box again)

However, I discovered a new issue with the car jacked up, I checked the oil and its fine, however I have been complaining about a rough idle for a while, and removing the oil cap I discovered some smoke (white in color) coming out of the oil filler hole. This could have been some messed oil though. I turned it off, left it for 30 min, turned back on and no smoke.

Further, I discovered that there is also a sucking pressure on the dipstick as well as the oil filler, now this could either be PCV or a blown headgasket, sounds like the issues are now coming fast and strong. Oh and I have a water leak although the car never ran hot, I have been watching it like a halk.

Any ideas, I have not noticed any smoke, she starts right up, but I do notice that the sucking through the dipstick/oil does change engine dynamics, and causes a very rough idle. Tell me its the PCV and not the dreaded block.

Also there is a distinct sucking noise when you turn the car off, and you can hear sucking throughout, but its done this since I bought it, and have put about 2500 KM on it

dude, eish, I'm too tired to think straight atm, but thank goodness its only power stearing fluid, I just got out under my car... kinda frustrated tho.. wasn't my coilpacks or plugs, I think the its either the ringgear on my custom kak flywheel, the ring gear/crank sensor. or the lambda sensors. although the lambda sensors read 100%, maybe they are still buggered. I'm at a point where I will have to fit another flywheel and gearbox to test if it solves the problem, maybe the hole they made in my gbox isn't lined up. also, both right side speedsensors it says are open circuit, as in not plugged in. *sigh*

no clue on the sucking issue tho :/

Clutchy, I feel ya man.

I still say though that its sensor related, but if you think about it logically.

Spanner said that the issue occur even when in neutral and revving past 3500 RPM, this means that its not the speed sensors, and since its a timed error fault above a certian RPM, I do not think its a random temp sensor (It could be though).

Sort out your ABS,DSC.

Did the error light change its point of engaging after you told it that it has a manual box ? Does the manual box have any elecrtonics ?

Whats up with that misfiring warning that your getting, Im pretty sure it is something to that extent.

misfire error I only get AFTER if it went into limp mode..
I think I just figured out its the lamda sensors tho. I just heard of other people on the e39 540i's and m5's having this issue. so I will have to replace the lambda sensors... the problem occured exactly after they put the new flanges on my exhaust, so its 100% logical that it could be my lambda sensors...
when the misfire errors come up, one of the reasons it lists is "damaging cats" .. so ye I reckon its it. neways, I'm 110% tired right now :) gnite bro ...

clutchy out.

Clutchy, the last time I scanned your car, we got an error on the passanger side oxygen sensor did'nt we?
What are you using to measure them...the GT1 computer?

So it turns out it wasnt the gearbox grinding, it was the power streering pump, i guess I am expecting the box to break, so any noise I suspect ok the box has had it, but still going strong.

So done today :

1. Power steering pump leak repair
2. Fixed the air vent on drivers door, easy as pie
3. Fixed the drivers mirror that wasnt working

I can now say that every single bit of electrical motor inside of the car works perfectly, not bad considering its 15 years old, I also did extensive reading today, and a PCV valve and accum. gasket replacement is in my near future as I have a coolant leak somewhere and the sucking noise is more then likely from the PCV.

Does anybody have leak down test equipment, I have an old compression tester here, but I dont trust it one bit.
