My dad recently purchased a f30 320i 6 speed manual. He purchased it brand new. This past weekend (has +- 2500 km's on by now) I decided to take it for a ''balls to the wall'' drive. Oh my word, does this thing fly. For an entry level 3 series it will knock your socks off. The power delivery is the most impressive thing. The lag is minimal and there is no high rev power drop off to speak off, it pulls hard all the way to the redline. It reminds me very much of a larger capacity n/a motor. It saw an indicated 240km/h with relative ease. The handling must also get special mention as there was numerous times where i found myself conering bends at much higher speeds than i thought I would be able to. The ride quality makes for a really nice change after the rough and hard ride quality that was the e90.

I really liked the f30, but feared that it would be diluted, being a new age car and stuff. But after my drive im totally sold. It is most definetely a drivers car. And to those who feared that the new turbo motors would ruin the 3 series, dont stress. These motors will never have the aural character that the 6 pots had, but they more than make up for it in other ways.

I am now strongly of the belief that if anybody buys a new german compact exec, and didnt atleast test drive the f30 320i, then they have sold themselves short. Big time. The diesels are nice. But these turbo petrols are something else. They are about to put BMW back on the ''working class performance car'' map in a big way. Wait and see....:bravo::bravo:

I think you hit the nail on the head with the gearbox. having 8gears means in most instances, its very spritely with its in gear accelaration.

Also a thing to remember is, that the 320i and 328i are basically the same, with different boost levels so effectively you have a 328i in the making with some software

Internals must be different on the F30 328i? 135kw to 190kw with just a remap?:fencelook:

328i has a different turbo...

and probably different injectors and intercooler.

I must admit, I test drove the new F30 320d and the 328i and I was not overly impressed by them. Yes they pack a punch, well the 328i does, but I can't help feeling a little disconnected in the F30. Too little feedback from the car in my opinion. The 320d was an auto and the 328i was a 6-speed manual

Petri, diesel is fuel from Satan.

I currently drive an E90 LCI 320d. I love this car. I initially had a 320i E90 and the difference between the 2 is chalk and cheese.

When the F30 was launched, i test drove the F30 328i and was amazed at how smooth the car was for a petrol, also, at how nippy it was, but this was to be expected with a new turbo petrol engine.

The amazement gained traction (mind the pun) when i test drove the 320d, with the same kW rating as my current 320d, the car seemed more refined, more responsive, almost like it wanted to accelerate by itself and I was holding back.

So i drove it very spiritedly, to the annoyance of the sales demo guy that came along for the drive. I mean, you cant expect to buy a car thats R360k for the base model (320i) and drive it like a granny, when you expect to tear the kak out of it.

I was very impressed with the fuel delivery on the autobox, it wasnt jerky at all and the car was a pleasure to drive, and had a good diesel kick (diesel owners know what I am talking about).

All in all, purists complain about the new engines and how the options are watered down and are not drivers cars, but i disagree.

I am now eagerly awaiting the launch of the F30 330d.

That will be a car to remap and dyno.

And once its here we can silence alot of Merc and Audi enthusiasts, and those pesky Fiesta ST crowds.
