Is CF getting old now?

Was just wondering what you guys think.

Every second BM I look at has CF somwhere, don't you think it's now getting "old"

If you guys want to play with Di-Noc there are some other very cool textures like suede, leather and 50 other things.

CF the material will only get old once we have something lighter and better to replace it with, as for the look, for me it has been old since the day people decided to put it on something just for the look :facepalm:

Luckily the CF on my car is hidden away in the engine bay and it is a least real, and has some purpose

Ah! yes the key word "real" doesnt it bug you that all the fake stuff devalues your real parts?

maybe, have never really thought of it that way, but it is true I find it kinda daft wrapping something to look like CF where you are not getting any of the properties why CF is used in the first place.

Would I replace panels on my car with CF? Yes I would, but I would paint it so that you wouldn't even know.

I think the look is a bit overplayed and devalued by fake stuff. It still remains an awesome material,though.

CF can look cool, although it does seem to be everywhere these days. For me it's something that I'll only use to save weight, but I won't ever have exposed CF. Say I have CF bonnet... it will be painted the same as the rest of the car.

yah, bonnets and boots exposed look stupid, but spoilers and splitters and stuff look good, IMO

Comes down to personal tastes. For one, I am all for keeping my cars as standard looking as possible (OEM standard that is), but some subtle and functional CF does look great on most cars, and certainly BMW's. Can CF be "overdone"? Yes - I remember seeing an M3 earlier this year that seemed to ODing on CF in a bad way - although the owner seemed happy! Then I remember someone posting a pic of a CF wrapped X5 - looked horrid, but then beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Personally I think the furthest I would go apart from functional CF OEM parts would be proper CF roundels...

I did the real suede on the interior of my car a couple of years ago(it's still there though and I don't plan to change it) and painted the trimmings on the outside. I currently have the CF wrap on the outside trimmings, only because I could not find body coloured vinyl and I needed to replace/cover the aging trimmings.

I would be the first one to say that the CF wrap does not do the car justice and actually rice the ride. But then again the concept of vinyl is new to me so that is what I am enjoying at the moment.

As for the firm believers in their REAL CF components, I think it's kinda like when you realized that CDs are a thing of the past. You had just spent a couple of paychecks on getting your collection up to scale and now it's becoming worthless plastic as mp3 and digital music take over. Hence you stick to your CD's as long as possible, SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THE INVESTMENT VALUE.

carbon should be used for weight reduction and thats it... putting covers over your mirrors with sticky tape is not weight reduction...

I was thinking to replace the re-inforcement plate with real CF -

It is rather heavy, but BMW does not manufacture this out of CF.
Can you knock off say 200kg's by doing this type of thing, and what would you replace to achieve this.
Sticky tape just make it look "ougat" (or "windgat") but does not serve any purpose other than that.

How are these CF bootlids and bonnets to the touch? The are lighter but do they feel solid/robust when opening/closing?

Not sure about the boots and bonnets, but from my experience with the CF strut brace it is so light it actually feels flimsy, so you kinda don't want to man-handle the thing, but apart from allowing some flex it is frikken rigid, I would assume the would be the same with other parts.

I know a guy who rebuilt an E60 M5, he bought a new bonnet and it was super light. I'm wondering if this was an OEM bonnet? If so what material is it made of. As light as it was it didn't feel flimsy at all.

Was probably aluminium, if it was OEM.
