Stupid battery is dead :bangdesk: so will have to either replace it or hook it up to another car. But I AM going to try this today!!

And its only a temp fix although recently I notice more and more cars with push to start buttons. It seems to be a common issue with the ignition switch. But hopefully you just have a flat battery.

Bugger, as an owner of a classic car you need to invest in a ctek car charger. Keeps the battery healthy while the rest of the car heals:thumbs:

When you say push to start buttons,a retrofit that replaces the standard ignition barrel and key? Does that then connect via some other route to the starter motor or bypass the ignition coil? I haven't tried it yet (jumping pins 11 and 12) cos I haven't had a chance to try and charge the battery with my other car.
How much do one of those ctek chargers go for CS? Guess I could get it from Midas or Makro or the such?
Spoke to Wes a bit today,he said I should check for vacuum leaks for the rough idle (before assuming it's the valve clearance) and some sensors on the thermostat/water pump housing. So I have a bit of a troubleshooting list I need to work through.I want to get it out of the garage to finish with the engine clean and some polishing, and just to drive it dammit!
Oh,and just by the by,even though I replaced both clutch cylinders, the car will NOT go into 5th gear. Takes all the others beautifully but refuses to go into 5th. Maybe that gearbox seal leak I have causing that issue? I don't want to force it in and break something.

I am not familiar with the gearboxes on any BM, but the shifting issue into fifth could be linkage related. While inspecting the links when someone moves it into the 5th gear position inside the car, you should be able to determine if it moves securely/smoothly at the gearbox.

Lovely car!!:inlove:

The push-button bypasses the switch in the key. Key still needs to be in the ignition though. 11 and 14 not 11 and 12.

There is a motronic trouble shooting manuel on the interweb. I downloaded it and started to diagnose. Then decided to let someone else do it. It is designed around a porsche, but it uses the same electrics. I will try and dig it up.

Vacuum leaks can be checked for by spraying butane in the area of the inlet manifold. If it sucks butane the idle will change. So you can zero in where the leak is. If no change in idle it may be something else. Be safe!!

Ctek chargers can be bought at most car part supply places. The one you want is MXS 3.6 or XS 0.8 . I am a member on the 4x4community where the importers supply special rates to members. Let me know if you want to wait till October for one!!! I have to order two more as friends have classed 2 of mine as far to useful to return.

Thanks CS! Tonight is BMW and Beer night at home where I work on the 635,so I am going to try that as far as the leaks are concerned and also try and get the car started. I know she must start cos she was running when the exhaust was replaced, and that was two weeks ago,a car does not simply stop (well that's my view anyway :bangdesk:)

As far as the charger is concerned,I may just take you up on that offer,or you can give me the addresses of your friends and I will liberate the charger for you.....:fencelook:

Interesting about the button.....never thought you would be able to do that! Just as a matter of interest, do you know what the little switch is on the left hand side of the steering column is? Trying to figure it out, but it doesn't seem to serve any practical purpose.

As far as bridging 11 and 14,any specific wire you use? Normal electrical wire? Red? Black? Anything specific?

Thanks again for ALL your help! Looking forward to you getting back so I can finally get to meet you.

The switch to left of the steering column... mine has the fog light switch there. That is just below the cluster. Then lower down is the window breaker (I think you already discovered that) if the windows won't work chances are its the breaker needs resetting (pushing).

Anything metal... I have used a bunch of house keys to bridge it before:rollsmile: It runs the starter motor. So once the car starts you remove it.

Keys?:roflol: I can see how this becomes interesting with an old car like this!! I can see being parked somewhere and jumping out with keys to start it....
I am beginning to wonder if the intermittent fault with the car not switching off is related to all of this, which does give me some relief from it perhaps being a mechanical fault. So making progress!! Patience is DEFINITELY a virtue with these old girls isn't it??

There is a switch actually ON the steering column. I'll take a snap and send post it,not sure what it does.

I have a feeling the car will start tonight (sending out positive vibes!)

No,not tonight Grant,I have to try and get the 6 going,it's becoming a bug bear in my life that the car isn't starting and I am determined to get it sorted for the October run.

So,quite a lot done on the car this weekend. Stripped the front off to get behind the bumper to clean it and realign the bumper, to varying degree of success. Found that one of the bumper brackets is bent so the front bumper doesn't quite line up now :thumbdo:
Anyways, have now completed a refurb on 3 of the rims, one more to go,the worst of the lot. So that should hopefully be done during the course of the week.
Managed to find out what the non-starting issue was. The new fuel filter I fitted was cracked on the housing and the incoming fuel line to the injectors was not fastened properly,so there was no fuel going into the engine. Replaced the filter with the old one and fastened the line, car started first time.
Repsrayed the front grills, looks 100% better, also cleaned the engine (you don't want to know what I saw come out),managed to sort out a minor glitch with the windows,so the car is coming along nicely now! I am in two minds about taking the OEM stripes off the car, they are not looking so good anymore and have become very brittle. So thinking about defaulting to white all over the car. Think it will make it look nice and sleek.
A big thank you to Grant (Carbon130) who gave up of his own time over the weekend to come and help with all sorts of things, and was rewarded with a jet of fuel in his eye! I would never have gotten as much done as I did without his sacrifice and time, thanks Grant!
Below some new pics, Grant has a few he can put up as well!

Its a pleasure Morgan. It took us a while to figure out the cause at why she wasn't starting.
I wont forget that fuel spraying into my eye, it was very sore and burning, it made me a proper "Petrol head"
I've got a bruise on my right arm from doing that bumper, squeezing my arm in the small spaces to get behind the bumper.

I wont be able to help you on Wed evening, got the club committee meeting. Saturday we at Killarney for the track day. Will help you on Sunday.

Here is a few selected pics, other pics I had are similar to Morgan's above

I would say stick with the stripes. White ones it really streaches out the lines.
You can replace them. Here:
oem stripes
I got mine from a guy on Big Coupe who occasions does a set or two.

I was reading Octane magazine yesterday and saw something that made me recall your comment about getting impatient and wanting to get her on the road.

I was reading about a guy that when the article was written had owned a car for 32 Years and driven if for less than an hour. Ok it was a rather special Bugatti and he started with just a chassis and and an oil tank...

Lol, that is patience personified!! After the weekend when Grant and I made huge strides on the car,I am feeling a lot better now. I know there are a couple of issues that I need to sort out mechanically, but I also know that's going to have to be done by someone who is better than a Hayne's manual....lol

You made a very valid point a few posts ago about it being a labour of love, and when I see how the car is now versus when I got it,it's chalk and cheese. I am very much enjoying restoring it,even if it's not going to be Pebble Beach brilliant, but it is a distraction from a very difficult stage in my life, and I am grateful for that.

I was pleasantly surprised to see there was a convertible derivative of the E24. Looked stunning.

Got an email, just now, for the classic car and bike show. It's on 18-19 Jan.
I will create a thread about it tomorrow.

Anybody know how to set the timing on one of these old motors? Is it something a garage mechanic (like me) can do or is it best left to the pros? I am thinking of giving it a go.
