Cool,if you are here will be great to head out there with you.

I spent a lot of time cleaning the back of the car last night, looks like it was used as a rally car,the boot was absolutely caked in dust and sand.So spent hours (until about midnight) cleaning and wiping and scrubbing, looking much better.

But now the car won't start. I am feeling like I am taking 1 step forwards and 2 steps back at times with the car, gets frustrating, but hey, that's part of owning a car like this isn't it?

Its a labour of love. Its a labour of love. Keep repeating until you believe it again.

Just persevere until everything is how you want it. Remember that at the end of the day you are going to have to deal with 20+ years of issues. But get 20+ years of soul.

That is the best thing anyone has said to me about this in a long time, thanks Steve!!

No update for a while,so time to put one in. Finally managed to get some good quality time working on the car today, installed both the clutch cylinders. Success, after much pumping of clutch pedals and after lots of dirty work, the car started taking gears and I now have a functioning clutch.
Next step is to get the exhaust sorted and then the car should be at least around the block driveable.

Stupid car won't start now. I can smell fuel at the back of the car but can't smell any coming through to the front. I am wondering if the fuel pump hasn't packed up. Car swings but will not take :thumbdo:. Maybe I should've left the exhaust off cos it started fine without it on :fencelook:

I suspect that the non starting issue MAY be related to a very bad battery. I am going to replace that before taking any more mechanical steps, instead of over thinking things.
Anyways,I spent a bit of time on the car this weekend, touching up a few things here and there, but decided to have a go at refurbishing the rims. I have only done one so far (it's a painstakingly long process) but I am VERY happy with the results.
Started off with a full clean of the rims (like I did to the M3) and used a significant amount of elbow grease to remove the muck from the inside of the wheel. This is what it looked like when I started:
I am not 100% sure what this brown stuff was, think it may have been 30 year old mud,but it took a fair bit of scrubbing to get it off.

Outside of the rim. You can see the years of driving on gravel roads has taken it's toll:

After a long scrub and soak:

Outside still not looking great despite treatment:

Comparison between two rim on the inside:

After I applied some wheel specific paint:

Comparison with a wheel I had just cleaned but have not yet refurbished:

And then finally this morning,I touched up a section of the car under the drivers side where a black strip had once been evident. Has made the car look nice and fresh. And with the refurbished rim back on,car looks pretty decent I think!!

So far I am happy with how certain things are coming along, but I think I am going to have to concede and get the car to a mechanic, but will replace the battery first and hopefully,HOPEFULLY,it starts.

I wonder if your car needs the "short wire" start, that Clownshoe's car often needed to start.
He had to connect 2 pins, in the obd connector, with a wire to start the car. The pin numbers are 11 and think 9 or 4. They in the position of 2pm and 8pm if I remember.
I remember doing it when I had his car in Jan.

Clownshoe, please confirm the pin numbers.

The tyres that came on the car were 220/55, but the 200s I have on now came with a set of E12 rims. I got the rims with good tyres at a very good price as I was told the 225s will set me back upwards of R8k a tyre,so was a fair compromise.

Apologies did mean 220/55

Your alternative could be those 745 BBS honeycombs in 16"

I'm angling to get myself a set of those. Seen some pics and they look fantastic.

Close... 11 and 14. That completely bypasses the ignition switch, if that works you have a faulty connection somewhere between the starter and the key.
Also check the starter relays on the side of the fuse box. A couple of bucks from midas, so worth swapping them out anyway.

Looking good!!!

So basically just bridge them with a piece of wire? No need to solder or anything like that?
I replaced the two next to the fuse box, wonder if one of them hasn't gone again,so will double check that!

Thanks CS,trying to get as much of the cosmetic stuff done as possible!

Sorry, just to check,CS are you talking about bridging on the OBD connector in the engine? The one below?

Ok cool, thanks for the help guys! I will give it a bash during the course of the day and see if the old girl coughs into life. But what happens then? I guess the car will need to go to an auto electrician? Is it only a temp fix?

Make sure the key is in the run position. And as you bridge it expect to see some sparks and jump into life. The map for the ports in the OBC connector is under the lid. If nothing happens and no sparks it is probably the battery. But check the battery first before electrician.
