Getting it back Monday UNC. It made so much noise,I was actually embarrassed....:fencelook:
Max at Cowley asked what I wanted to do,I asked for something traditional and not too loud, want something close to what the car came out with,so I can appreciate that big 3.5L lump. I will post a vid once the exhaust is done so that finally everyone can hear what it sounds like, including me!
If you wanna know how loud, ask Grant (Carbon),he had to turn his radio up all the way to drown out the sound!LMAO!!

The car is f@cking loud. I thought Carbon was loud. Carbon is now a quiet one.

Had to follow Bugger in case of issues and for directions to Cowleys.
I had to turn my music volume up at the robots to not hear the 635 branch lol. I had to laugh at everyone staring at Bugger

Embarrassed for what?

You know the saying, if its getting too loud, you're getting too old.

Im glad u still enjoying the "lets get this car sorted phase"..... it makes for cool stories to tell people after the car is done

Wes!!! The prodigal son has returned!:roflol:

Was just embarrassed cos of how loud it was, never wanted dark tinted windows so badly in my life!!LOL!

Loud doesn't describe it,of that I can assure you.....when I got there I told the guy I had a hole in my exhaust,I don't think he was expecting NO exhaust!:roflol:

Car is just about there hey Wes,it's just got a nasty leak on the gearbox, the second oil leak I though was there was actually just from the car sitting in two different spots, so there isn't a nasty second leak by the looks of things :fencelook:

Quick question though, when these cars are running, where should the temp gauge be sitting? I notice mine was sitting quite near the red, which worried me,but it never actually went INTO the red,so was wondering. Is it supposed to sit halfway or is it fine being that high?

Should be in the middle. Mine generally sits in the middle, except when stopping after a high speed run, I take that to indicate the viscous coupling on the fan is not quite at spec anymore. Someone has fitted an electric aux fan switch in the cabin. It assume the thermostat is done for and this was a work around.

Ok,got the car back from Cowleys, sounds a million times better but the car is in desperate need of a tune up,misfiring badly,so runs ok,then gives a bit of kak, then runs ok,then gives kak. BUT,when it runs ok......:inlove: What an awesome drive! The sound is wonderful!! Just think it needs some TLC mechanically now and that should set the old girl up. Very impressed with Cowleys service as well, Max was brilliant.
As soon as that is sorted I will post some vids.Oh,and I ran out of petroleum in my driveway....:bangdesk:

The M30 requires accurate valve clearance settings to work smoothly.
No matter how much you tune it if clearances are out you will know about it in rough lumpy idle and lack of smooth power delivery.

As to you running out of petroleum it is consistent with the M30's prodigious use thereof.

:roflol: Yeah,I have realised in a hurry how thirsty the old girl is! I have driven her exactly 17km's since I got her.

Ok,so basically I just need to get the valve clearance set? Is this a DIY job or better done at a mechanic? Cos the symptoms you are describing match my situation perfectly.

If you have not done it before a few dozen times I would propose that you do not start experimenting on her now.

It is a matter of feel more than anything else.

Engine needs to be cold to be set and once set it needs to be started to hear noises and if noises the eccentrics need to be stripped and checked and if eccentrics are ok then one needs to look at rockers and shafts.

All easy stuff in theory......

Ok brilliant, thanks for all the info! I am going to err on the side of caution and take it to a BMW mechanic around the corner from me and let him have a look at her. I don't want to take a chance and then I break something!
Thanks for the help a1exander!

Sup bud...looking forward to seeing this machine on Sunday...

Hey hey stranger, long time man, how's things going? Not so sure the 6 will be there on Sunday, don't think I will be able to get it to a mech on time to have the valve clearance set, so will be slumming it in the M. Will have the missus' Cooper S there as well, awesome little car.

Really looking forward to Sunday. Going to try and get the windscreen replaced on the 6 this week still if possible and do some detailing this weekend.

While they are at it make sure the banjo bolt is tight.
@Alexander... interesting comment on lumpy idling. Mine does that and I have recently come to the realisation that the last mechanic that worked on the car did not know his arse from his elbow. He suppposedly set the valve clearances. I will have the valve clearances checked as well.

The guys may set the correct feel on the gauge but then cock it up whilst tightening the nut on the rocker to set the eccentric.

Loose clearances are ok although noisy, it is when they go tight and the valve does not close properly that it becomes a problem, leading to other issues

Cool, thanks Clownshoe,I will get them to check that as well. Apparently the specialist workshop around the corner from me is run by an old German guy who knows older BMW, Merc and Audi very well, so here's to hoping. Also got a quote of R400 to have my new windscreen fitted  which I am quite chuffed about.

Thanks for all the info guys, it really is helping and ties up nicely with the internetwebthingy research I have been doing. I don't think it's long now before the car is back on the road and humming along.

Clownshoe, are you going to take yours to the car show in February here in Cape Town?

I won't even be able to tell you what country I will be working in in Feb!!!... Feb 2014 is a loooong stretch. Which motorshow? By my current roster I should be home in the latter part of Feb... but that will almost definitely change.

Name of said specialist workshop?

Clownshoe, he's talking about the classic car show. The one that I had your 635 for, in Jan/Feb

Oh that show. If I am not there we could possibly have it there again like last time. By then all the gremlins should have been found and killed.
