Ga-3M in for vanos rattle clearances

Since Peter referred me for the remainder of the work Gareth wants done to the M3 I thought I could post it up here. Among the stuff I needed to install was a new short shift lever and thats when I noticed this, it had a shortened 330i propshaft instead of the M3 one. Centre universal and rear CV had thrown their grease all over the show.




New M3 propshaft ordered and collected, gotta love tourings!



Love the packaging.





Black sticky stuff for centre bearing.


Messes to clean up for 2 reasons, one so the sticky stuff can stick and two so you can monitor the condition of the new propshaft.


Heat shield dirty too.



Prepsol degreaser on a paint brush followed by karcher power!

Thanks for the pics Warren and the great attention to detail! Gents a lesson here, earlier on in the year I was having a problem with slight vibrations through the drivetrain at certain rpm, discovered it was the prop causing this, and was told that I could have my prop reconditioned and decided to do it as it was obviously less costly than buying a new one from BMW. Had it done and the vibrations were mostly gone but could feel something every now and then still but basically just lived with it. Then as Warren has shown, 6 months down the line he discovers what you see in the pictures above, suffice to say I wasn't happy at all. Myself and Warren had a chat and I decided the best thing to do would be to order a new complete prop shaft from BMW which is the lovely new one in the pics above albeit slightly heavy on the wallet! :thumbs:

Lesson is you gotta double check what are you told when it comes to a part like the prop shaft on an M3. I've done research on overseas forums since and have seen that a couple of guys also had some issues when going the recon route.

You guys got that prop really fast. Was there one already en route or in the country? I had to wait a while for mine from Germany.

Hey bud, yeah there were two in stock at BMW main parts Midrand.

And obviously the other lesson is it's so difficult to find companies/businesses who you can trust to do proper work on your car, and it's for this reason that Warren and Peter are the only people who will see my car from now on for anything it needs!:thumbs:

I find it shocking that the car doesn't have the correct prop shaft given the overall pristine well cared for condition of the car!

Hey bud,

When I got the car the prop shaft coupling needed replacing and was quite bad so I'm thinking it was damaged either from this or from when the guys actually changed the coupling and did something to damage the prop shaft in the process. I believe it had the correct prop shaft up until I took my car to have the prop reconditioned and for some reason or other the place thought they knew best and replaced it with a reconned shortened 330 one!:argh:

As u say though, at least we've now been able to correct this.:thumbs:

Gareth, you should take that 330i prop shaft back and demand a refund. This makes me very angry. Now you have to pay twice for something to be fixed.[POUTING FACE]

Out with the old.


In with the new. Sorry I forgot the side by side shot.




Other stuff to be installed.


Flange gets a final wipe down before prop install.


Both surfaces where the black sticky stuff goes get a final wipe down with rubbing alcohol.

Karcher clean.


Prop installed.




Now just as I was about to start refitting the exhaust I checked the condition of the exhaust backbox mounts, good thing I did. 2 are broken and the third is about to break. 3 new ones have been ordered, R521ea.






That should bring these aftermarket exhaust tips closer to the bumper diffuser, hopefully they don't touch.
