Fellow Fanatic e46 330i in bad state

I was at my dealer Ysterday(Paarlberg) and saw this silver e46 330i with BMWfanatics stickers on the back doors the small window. It came in for Power steering

Ok if that Fenatic is on the Forum lets just say what I saw wrong

1. The power steering mod was done where U use the E36 steering pump that last much longer but they did not secure e36 pipe properly. as you know its not the same pipe so thes pipe was cable tied to other pipes and chaffed thruogh on one spot and also busy on a nother place. Advice is to replace the pipe and use P-Clamps to secure pipe and prvent chaffing.

2. Nasty oil leaks. you need to replace your Tapet cover Gascket and oil filter housing gascket(likeR60) or you will run the risk of loosing all your oil and damage the motor(seriously it looks realy bad but its not so bad)

3. Remove and clean your Idle control valve

4. Give that motor a good steam clean

So If that person is on the forum then there are your pointers its easy DIY's and wont cost you an arm and an Leg.

e36 power steering on an e46? That is honestly the first time I hear about that. How did you know his idle control valve is dirty and lastly isn't that the reason why the car is there in the first place?

No heavy steering. there is like no Fluid in reservoir and if you ad some more it just pisses out like a few minutes. not to sure about the pump but its something to do with the Flat back and round back pumps. Its so long since I had my e46 5 years back now. I know you have to change the pipes also. I can tell you that the pipe currently installed does not secure in its original places. Lets just say I heard and saw a few things thats how I know. Just trying to help that person but they were gone before I could chat to them. Its an CA registration

Guys I don't think its the 330i you guys are thinking of. Iceman has actually met the owner of that car and they have "driven next to each other at the same speed while aiming for a point in the distance that would bring the end of their jourey together."

On another note, he also knows a few things about the e46 so if he says the e36 powersteering pump works then I'll take his word for it.

I feel that was aimed at me so,
All I am saying is that I never heard about doing that nor can I find any topics on the internet about it. If I wanted to say "You know nothing" then that is what I would of said.

I did not intend to offend anyone. But props for trying to warn the owner though

It's my car :=):

Thanks for caring and keeping an eye out for a fellow fanatic Iceman

It's a work in progress at the moment. I'm taking extremely good care of it and keeping my eye on the work to be done. Thanks for the tips

The "mod" is just a temp measure on the pipes so the fluid doesn't leak out. I know the production manager there and he just secured it so I can keep ATF in. The pump on the car is an E46 item.

I am having the pipes and gaskets replaced, I've already had them quote me the part numbers etc. Car is due to be steam cleaned to clear up what is left of the fluid leak so I can see what and where.

I have heard About this as the e36 pump lasts a lot longer than the e46 pump. As far as e46 power steering pumps go, it's a little confusing.

There's a few versions:
Lf-20 roundback
Lf-20 flat back
Lf-30 - this is an updated version of the pump due to all the lf-20 failures.

BMW don't even sell the lf-20 anymore, they only supply the lf-30.

The e36 pump is just another option that can be used for better reliability.

Thanks Iceman and AdiS. BMWFanatics FTW.

Rest assured Silver Shadow will be on the road and in tip top shape before you can say "power steering pump"

No Phoenix. Not aimed at you at all. Just letting people know that it should be possible.
