Thanks for all the adviceI think perhaps we've gone a bit off course here - didn't say I am looking to upgrade - simply considering something newer and with motor plan
Any experience with the cars on the list is what I am after - drive quality, performance, livability, known issues/reliability etc. Thanks all!
Pretty sure ya'll already said some of those aren't an upgrade š also didn't use the word upgrade anywhere hehe šWants to change M140i
For something newer and with plan
Lists S4, M340i, M2 Comp, M235i/135i and New Gen S3 IN THE FIRST POST
Sorry I read all that and thought you wanted to upgrade!![]()

Having said all that..would go Audi..but rather an S5..better in the most important metrics compared to an overly understated S4.š§Pretty sure ya'll already said some of those aren't an upgrade š also didn't use the word upgrade anywhere hehe š
But seriously, the idea is really not to look for an outright upgrade. Not like when I was going from the 320d to the 140. But this time around the idea is more 'newer'. Yet, if it ends up being an upgrade that's a bonus. Also, as you alluded to earlier Llew, upgrade is subjective to one's needs and rightly so. I do see how some of those cars do tick the 'upgrade' box
Anyway, all the comments are still good advice and I appreciate it. Just thought I'd mention this so as to clarify šš»
I knew that was coming lol šTime to upgrade your car and your phone lmao

Noted and thank you - good to hear this from a previous owner. I must be very honest - I am worried about missing that B58 when looking at the M135/M235 - but will give them a go and see. The S4 was very nice, seats were extremely comfy and the ride was def better than the 140, great spec too - but the performance is underwhelming, regardless of that it says on paper - might be fast but you don't experience it like in the 140. B58 aside, I would not mind something with the newer interiors. I miss something like Android auto - for me personally its very useful for a few reasons. The look and feel of the newer interiors really make it a nice place to be inside. The other thing with something like the F87 M2 - their interiors are pretty much exactly the same as the 140 - so no real upgrade there in terms of interior except the M seats. My car has CF trimming inside and alcatara steering wheel cover and OEM M Perf carpets. I think my biggest conern would be that I miss it...but I know if I test drive something I'll know - the S4 for example I knew wasn't the one after the drive.I sold my m140 before going abroad for a bit. Great car, perfect for my needs, 4 doors and fun. Sold with 85k kms. Bought the clubman JCW last year when I came back. Real āfunā car, great interior, comfy seats and just a cool place to be and quick.
Practicality is the same as the 140. Almost the same size. Interior feels more roomy, but space is very similar to m140.
Itās no m140 though, the b58 is a gem. The b48 in the JCW is quick, but 4 pot aināt as nice as a 6. Feel like Iām always thrashing the little 2l.
I totally understand the value in Motorplan. Probably better to save for maintenance etc, but the value in worry free motoring is worth it for me. BUT I donāt think motorplan is so worth it Iād look at the S3 or S4ās, didnāt find them great. RSās seemed exciting, but overpriced.
Other than the m2 or maybe the m340 on your list, nothing else will give you the drive enjoyment of the m140.
You got to spend money then.Noted and thank you - good to hear this from a previous owner. Agreed.Just buy an X3 and get it over with

You not getting anything with a better interior, with better performance/driver orientation and space for under R1M.
Not sure I saw budget in the thread but to get everything you seem to want in a relatively new package, with lots of MP left, as well as a performance oriented car, is going to be 7 figures
Hahaha all good, I'll take it - I know it comes from a good place š. I've found in the past that having these conversations with ya'll helps one consider all the options and ideas and helps one narrow down the options and prioritize the list of wants. I'll test drive a few cars mentioned, I know I must to help me make a decision...if that is to keep the 140 in the end. I've thought that if I keep it and let the plan lapse I can install an aftermarket android head unit. On the contrary if I keep it for another 3/4 years, where will the mileage be and the value then to trade. Lots to consider and it always takes a good while to make a decision. Thanks for baring with me (and my list of non upgrade upgrade cars lol). Going to try test a few cars this week. 2021 model M340's are available with sub 40k km mileage on for +- R850k so def think one can have the newer interior, still a B58 and motor plan for under a bar.Yeah agree. Going to be mid-7 figures to get all the upgrades that (salt apparently doesn't want), plus motorplan.
(Sorry @Salt I am going to milk this one)
In all seriousness you're going to have to drop one of your requirements if shopping below R1M. I assumed you were at or slightly above this though with M340 and S4 on the menu.
Alot of cars don't support android auto. When they do, somehow they don't support wireless android auto even when they have wireless carplay. At least this was true until very recently (like where the cars would be out of your price range). Anyway there are ways and means around this via coding (in some cases), dongles and adapters depending on the car you get so don't write it off just for not having AA out the box. iDrive with Bluetooth isn't bad and it has its own benefits and feel to it. I've accidentally left my wifi off a few times and used it because I'd already set off and wasn't in the mood to fiddle. If you have some specific requirements obviously that won't work though.
Trouble having something like the B58 where it is pretty much the top of it's game is that you will end up having to buy the M a step beyond where you're coming from (so an M3/4 or even 5) or something like a Porsche (like everyone else seems to be) to get something materially different. From what your'e describing in terms of the feel/power delivery etc, even cars WITH a B58 are going to feel a bit less engaging for what you're after, unless you're getting a Z4 M40i (Maybe?). It's just physics
Iāve owned an M135i (3 door) and it was plenty fun and very different drive compared to my 440i. M135i felt more fun tbh, it felt aggressive. The B58 was just absolutely rapid and a very linear feel to the acceleration. They both have very different ways of putting the power down.
My 440i was in its 9th year and just touched 40k kmās, had a DP for about 1 year. I didnāt experience any major issues, except for squeaky brakes at times. After owning both variants I agree, donāt sell it B58 for an N55, you will regret it, get an M performance exhaust ( if you donāt have one) and a DP, the sound it just addictive and you will enjoy the car all over again. I canāt think of another car that you wonāt have to spend double the money and no guarantee you will enjoy it twice as much. If you looking for a refreshed interior and tech, then pretty much anything new will suffice but at the risk of the losing every other aspect of performance for the same/similar price. Get an aftermarket warranty if Motorplan is a concern, you probably will still be in a better space than a replacement. Personally, I find the Audis boring, just look around, seems to me like there is way more BMWs on the road, than Audis, VW (performance cars) or Mercs.

You'll lose more trading now, then re-trading a new car in another 4 yrs than you will just driving your (presumably either close to actually) paid off car. @OP, the only one on that list that is gonna give you more fizz, is an M2Comp. Or just do what everyone else here is doing, save up until you can upgrade to a porsche![]()
