I suppose we are comparing because the 328i is only about 8% more expensive (39k on the steptronic model) ?
Looking at the specs the 328i is a seriously good, well balanced car.
BUT
Just don't be fooled by the consumption figures. As with the 320i, the "real world" consumtion for Mr. Average Driver is way more.
That said, even at roughly 10-11 l/100km (which is what I expect in real life in mixed driving, not like a granny), 180kw is seriously good power for that consumption, making this a very well balanced car. To put this in perspective, my wife's Hyundai ix35 consumes about this much.
I just think the cars are too vastly different to really compare. They suit totally different niches, aimed at totally different minded drivers.
I have actually taken one on a long test drive and can say that the power plant is a lot quieter. The sound is somewhere between the old 320d and the 330d. :thumbs:Vicus said:BMW have refined the 320d motor in the new X3, I have read great reviews on its smooth sound and its up to 140kw and 400nm.
Yeah wondered when this was coming. One of the things I love about BMW is their rate at which they improve on their power plants. So, my guess is that it will not be very long before the 320d has this 140 kW unit.
Only 5kw and 20Nm up. But that is the nature of things. Gradual improvement.

Fuel consumption???, well that's another debate all together .

Please stop making me miss my diesels. :'(Vicus said:Naruto said:wouldn't you compare 3.0T vs 3.0D?

The price difference is 50k. Over four years the fuel cost will be around 60k making the 335i 110k more expensive over 4 years.
It is becoming more clear to be that comparing Petrol to Diesel is futile.
The beauty of the diesels is the effortless torque and the economy. The power that one gets for the low consumption. We also love the "feel" of the diesel. The balance. Petrol heads seem to care less about this.
Petrol fans seem to like the higher revs for some reason we diesel fans just cannot really appreciate. And they seem to care less about consumption and/or price. They just prefer the "feel" of the petrol.
Two radically different tastes in cars that seems to have just about no common ground. Each to his own then. :=):
P.S.
I just get really confused when I see threads like this:
335i Consumption :dunno:

How is it then that the 320d outruns the 320i ?
Blah...I do understand, actually. Your real point being that there is no diesel equivalent for something like the 335i. In that, I agree with you. (Performance wise)
But mentioning a diesel BMW and a 1.4 hatch in the same sentence is really just silly, bud.

I have not seen a 320d outrun an f30 320i yet nad watched a few of them run.
Infact Shaun bought hus f30 320i auto when i had my lci 320i auto and both stock he woukd run away from the D.
With regards to x35i consumption on my M135 I average between 9.5 - 10l / 100kms and that includes some hard driving.
However, i did not choose the car for consumption.

This is an old discussion so let me just share a few facts.
We took two demo vehicles with more or less same mileage to the km track. Before going we filled both vehicles with fuel and reset the OBC's of both.
Vehicle 1 the F30 320d auto 8speed
Vehicle 2 the F30 3201 auto 8speed
At the track we decided on best of three runs just in case there was a bit of driver error.
Run 1
Pullaway up to 100km/h the 320i is half a car ahead. From 100 to 160 the 320d actually passes and opens up a 2 car lead that it holds to the end of the km.
Run 2
The 320d gets away better and at 100km/h there is no difference.Same again from there 320d forges ahead and ends the km 2car lenghts ahead.
Run 3
The 320d ahead to 100km/h and opens up 3 car lenghts at the km end.
Data reveals that the 320d has done the km runs with exits of 185/185/184.
The 320i exit runs show 183/182/180.
The petrol car seems to have heat soaked more than the diesel car.
We head back to the office and on return the average fuel consumption on the F30 320d reads 5.9 litres per 100km and the F30 320i reads 10.6 litres per 100km.
The facts speak for themselves but at the end of the day you are either a petrol or a diesel person.
