F30 328i vs F30 320d

So I am loving the lil debates and discussions between the F30 320i vs the F30 320d, and reading everyones opinions and the facts it seems the 320d is the better car provided you aren't biased in favor of the petrol or diesel... and I am not biased towards diesel cars by the way, I am a petrol fan boy and will never drive a diesel. :fencelook:

So since we know that after driving the 320i and the 320d that most would choose the 320d, what are the thoughts on the 320d vs the 328i?

If this thread exists somewhere I am sorry... I did search and found nothing however.

Exactly. If you want to get over a 1000kms of a tank, instal a bigger tank

I mean for the performance of the 328i its damn great on fuel economy. My 330i is a fuel burning machine compared to it.

now now guys stop the lorries :roflol:
Let's be sensible here and think about it for a moment...

...moment over.
328i each and every time thank you.

328i:

Performance
Fuel Capacity 60
Fuel Consumpsion - Highway 5.2
Fuel Consumpsion - Urban 8.5
Consumption Annual Average 6.4
Fuel Type unleaded
Fuel Supply high precision direct injection, turbo
Acceleration 0-100 Final 5.9
100 to 0 Seconds 0
Quarter Mile Sprint 0
Top Speed Final 250
Power Output 180kw@5000
Torque 350nm@1250
Auto Traction Control yes
Limited Slip Diff no
Towing Capacity (KG) 1600
Turning Circle (Meters) 11.3
Turns Lock to Lock 0

I suppose we are comparing because the 328i is only about 8% more expensive (39k on the steptronic model) ?

Looking at the specs the 328i is a seriously good, well balanced car.

BUT

Just don't be fooled by the consumption figures. As with the 320i, the "real world" consumtion for Mr. Average Driver is way more.

That said, even at roughly 10-11 l/100km (which is what I expect in real life in mixed driving, not like a granny), 180kw is seriously good power for that consumption, making this a very well balanced car. To put this in perspective, my wife's Hyundai ix35 consumes about this much.

I just think the cars are too vastly different to really compare. They suit totally different niches, aimed at totally different minded drivers.

Exactly. Supposed to be fanatics. Then I ask myself. Are folks here fanatical about the brand or fanatics about driving the brand that exudes pure driving pleasure...

It depends on what you derive pleasure from.

My BMW:

0-100 in 7,5 seconds. Yes there are faster cars, but my car is still faster than 70% of other cars on the road. I have more than enough power to deal with any type of driving situation. Most faster cars are a lot more expensive than mine. For what I paid, I have superior performance. I don't even want to talk about top speed.....we are only allowed to drive 120km/h......#frustrating.

Has effortless, smooth power delivery makes driving exactly that: "effortless".

I could actually get in my car in Benoni, and drive to Port Elizabeth at the speed limit without ever stopping. Yup, could do it on one tank.

My car is solid, rattle and hassle free, has all the creature comforts one could want. So on my trip to PE, I arrive there fresh as a daisy. because of the way my car drives, and the interior comfort level.

For me, sheer driving pleasure.

For others, sheer driving pleasure is a traffic-light victory against a GTi.

For each of us it is probably something different.

Wow long reply but I agree. As long as you have fun in your car and not merely use it as a tool to get you from A to B

Amen to this post!!

For me driving pleasure isn't about racing either... but I want enough power, enough power for the car to earn my respect... enough power to feel like I can get lost on the open road with my BMW machine under me. And that is my happy place.

The build quality and comfort of coarse adds to that.

I've had both diesel and petrol BMW's.. I love the torque of the diesel, I hate that it doesnt rev like a petrol car. I love the fuel consumption of the diesel, I hate the sound of 2 liter diesel idling with my window open.

When im in a petrol car I dont miss my diesel, when I was in my 320d I missed a petrol car sound and high revving.

I suppose at the end of the day its what you can live with and makes you happy.

Oh and yes, 320i before 320d for me, nevermind 328i vs 320d

320i tuned will get you quite a bit more power than a tuned 320d, You save R30000 between 320i and 320d when buying new, add ac schnitzer chip to 320i for R42000 and you are very close to 328i power for just over 320d money. :fencelook:

BMW have refined the 320d motor in the new X3, I have read great reviews on its smooth sound and its up to 140kw and 400nm.

Yeah wondered when this was coming. One of the things I love about BMW is their rate at which they improve on their power plants. So, my guess is that it will not be very long before the 320d has this 140 kW unit.

Only 5kw and 20Nm up. But that is the nature of things. Gradual improvement.
