F30 320i vs f30 328i

What would be a better buy? Does the 320i and 328i have the same motor?

If one does software on the f30 320i would it be performing same as a 328i?

As far as i know, both have the same displacement.

I would go for a 320i with a software upgrade

The 328i just isnt worth the extra money!

From what I have heard, you cannot map a 320i to the same power outputs of the 328i, will be around 160kw (flywheel) on 320i.

You also need to look at the brakes, diff, gearbox, etc.

However, that engine definitely has some nice tuning potential that seems very close to the 328i.

Being a turbo'd engine, I'm sure that you could push 328i power out of the 320i, but there must be some hardware differences in the 328i that helps give it the edge.

Guys... the two engines are NOT the same even though it sounds like it at first glimps.

The F30 328i has a compression ratio of 10:1 as where the F30 320i has a compression ratio of 11:1

If one looks at the compression volume of both engines the difference is obvious: F30 320i: 49,9 cm³ but F30 328i: 53,7 cm³ which indicates that different pistons are used in the 328i

With an initial compression ratio of 11:1 on a turbo engine you can be sure that you are close to the knock line so I see VERY VERY little chance to gain much power through software!

Of course.... one needs to "play" with it a bit to see what actually goes

Are you saying the 328 has more software potential than the 320?

Ok, I'm confused... does it have decent tuning potential, or very little potential?

The F30 320i is running very close to the max achievable power as it comes from the factory!

The high compression ratio of 11:1 prevents you from getting much closer to the knocking line.
IF one would attempt to gain loads of power one would have to reduce compression in order to raise boost (boost = power)

So the answer to your question is a simple "NO potential" or let me rather say not much potential....

... and let me add: you can certainly NOT convert a F30 320i to an 328i with a few easy and cheap steps! (BMW would be stupid to allow that)

Ok, thats kind of sad if you want more power out of the car,

Im going to apply for my 320i m sport today....i drove it and although its not super fast its still good.

Its either the 320 or stick with my kia for now

NOT !

@MSM you say different diffs , gearbox in f30 328i vs f30 320i. Please expand more on this. Lets see if google can help your explanations here.

I have a f30 MSport 320i added to my garage currently and a f30 MSport 335i on order. I chose both with M running gear and thats completely different motors but the ....lets see if google can help you here.

F30 320i and F30 328i have different turbos and different compressions and thats about it. Internals are the same !

Shaun.... isn't that a bit contradicting?

Getting interresting...

@Shaun... I see you signed tuned F30 320i... Did you do a tune on your car?

Are you referring to his previous post? If so, that's not his sig, that's a second post which the system appended (since there weren't any posters after him at that point in time).

I recall him saying in his showroom thread that he wouldn't be tuning the 320i.
