F20 125i major failure, astronomical bill

Turbo being poked is a given. Engine should be fine, but bmw is trying to cover their ass. Insist that only the turbo gets done, and then get the timing chain and guides replaced. Known N20 issues.

N20 life. Hope you get the issue solved without having to fork out so much.

Alternatively, I'd suggest doing something dodgy with insurance but I shall remain quiet :hammerhead:

Thank you.

285k is way too much to fork out on your own for repairs that are yet still unknown.

U will be surprised, got a mate thats sitting with a quote for R209k for a engine replacement F30 320i :dunnoanymore:

Sad reality that the early N20 motors were terrible :dunnoanymore:

Which BMW models are more reliable? (say 2012 to now).

You can't beat a diesel reliability!

Over 160k on my f30, everything is original not a single thing has failed!( Steering rack was replaced, common on f30, nothing to do with the engine) With my luck something will probably fail now lol

It seems so with diesels, my friend's e90 320d is on 280k with no issues. I'm fantasizing about an F30 330d 2014 model.

BMW are most definitely taking you for a ride. Trust me I know! I sent my car in for a coolant leak that they caused when they fitted new turbos and they tried to say that it was wear and tear and not their fault and wanted to charge me over 18k to replace all the coolant pipes for the turbos :roflol: and then another almost 30k to replace my steering rack cause I told them they left a bolt loose that I had to tighten which caused a vibration and knocking sound. They tried to use that to tell me I needed a new steering rack :biglol:

They crazy. Take your car away from them ASAP! After they replace your engine and turbos they going to then tell you everything else in the car is farked too and you gonna get a 450k bill!

Oh and the coolant leak was due to them fitting a coolant pipe to the rear turbo and pinching the oring cause they too stupid to look what they doing or lube the orings before fitment. Afzil sorted it out for me one time shoe shine! BMW are psychotic!

I know its so unfortunate that they make such nice looking cars. They Hire the best designers on the planet and then skimp out on things like ummmm the engine! :dunnoanymore:

Is there a dealer or dealers who typically charge decent prices for parts? I'm looking for competitive prices on turbo that can be less than the R25k quote I have from the independent workshop looking at my car.

If it’s a Garrett turbo you can get it from Turbo Direct (don’t expect any after sales service from them should something go wrong). They import Garrett turbos and I ended up paying R11k or so for a brand new OEM turbo for my E46 320d.

Gaby at Fastec also seems to do great work with reconditioning turbos. I have never personally dealt with him, but he is widely regarded as the guru when it comes to turbos.

All the best!

BMW do swaps with a cash difference. I gave them my old N54 turbos and got two newly factory reconditioned turbos from them for 13.7k
