BMW F20 120d – Major Service, Coolant Flush & Diff Oil

Recently got a message from fellow BMWFanatics member Ridhwaan, who had picked up a neat BMW F20 120d with fairly low mileage not too long ago. He mentioned he'd be visiting JHB and wanted to get some maintenance done while he was in town.

He had a gearbox service booked with ZF, and the plan was to bring the car through to me afterward for:

A full Major Service
Differential Oil Change
Coolant Flush + Bleed

His parts/fluids arrived yesterday, and this morning the car was dropped off and we got cracking. Here’s a breakdown of the service:

Service Procedure Summary:
1. Vehicle Prep

  • Protective covers fitted to the driver side seat, steering wheel, and footwell.
  • Vehicle moved onto the lift and engine bay blown out with compressed air.
2. Engine & Fluids
  • Brake fluid tested, Still good and doesn't need to be replaced now.
  • Engine flush added, idled to circulate, and then shut off.
  • Vehicle raised, undertrays removed.
  • Old engine oil drained fully.
  • Full undercarriage inspection done (suspension, drivetrain, brakes, tyres).
  • New sump plug and crush washer installed.
3. Filters
  • Replaced fuel filter.
  • Replaced oil filter after cleaning housing + cap, new O-ring installed.
  • Replaced air filter – airbox cleaned with compressed air beforehand.
4. Engine Oil Refill
  • Fresh Motul X-Clean 5w40 oil filled up and checked.
5. Coolant & Differential Work
  • Vehicle raised, old coolant drained.
  • Rear differential opened, old oil extracted and refilled with Motul Gear oil.
  • Diff plug and area cleaned up.
  • Vacuum tested the cooling system.
  • Coolant system vacuum-filled with coolant/distilled water mix.
  • System bled thoroughly.
6. Final Touches
  • Cabin air filter replaced.
  • Full diagnostic scan done.
  • Cleared old codes and reset service reminders for:
    • Engine Oil
    • Vehicle Check
  • Test drive completed to confirm everything running as it should.
  • Post-drive coolant top-up done.
  • Engine bay wiped down and dressed.
7. Customer Handover
  • All old parts and leftover fluids boxed up neatly for the customer.
  • Vehicle was collected this evening, all sorted and ready to roll.
  • Followed up with him afterwards, he said the car was running great and he was very happy with the service received.
