So from a maintenance perspective, and to keep to the OP`s question, how would you justify a diesel being cheaper to maintain?
In retrospect, the diesel has more components that are pricey that can require unplanned replacement (Turbo, High Pressure Fuel Pump etc.)
I would say, unless you have a lemon, the 320i and 320d should cost you about the same to maintain if looked after in the long run.

I have a 2006 323i Exclusive. Bought in in 2011 with 100 000km in the clock.
Currently sitting on 141 000 km.
Since I got it, I have:
- serviced it every 10 000km.
- replaced 2 tyres
- replaced water pump and thermostat
I haven't done a proper detailed calculation, but I've spent about R20 000 on it thus far.
The water pump and thermostat were done under warranty (thank GOD).
Right now, I need to do a service, replace the clutch and possibly brakes pads and discs. I'll hear what else needs to be done when I take it in.

Looking back at my MP CIA, R36270.47 was spent on the car since 26/06/2013 (my ownership).
Quite a lot really, BUT to me it seems like these were mostly wear and tear items. Lets see what the next months and km's bring. If the MP bill continues like this then I will buy an extension. If not then I will trade for a diesel.

Then again, dealerships charge ridiculous fees for labour. Might as well have a brain surgeon servicing your car. Not to mention the prices they charge for parts as well.
