My car has now been out of motorplan for 44k km spend 16 k on it since only service and replaced the clutch and dual mass flywheel. No other issues ever. Car is nou out of motor plan for the last 4 years.

you mean the last two years? 2007 model, so your MP would have ended 2012.

I see all of the positive replies are from people who are not driving E90 320s. Nothing yet from 320 owners?

Well let me break the ice. My 320i has been out of MP since December 2010 and now has 154 000km.

My costs are as follows
  1. 2011 - R6700
  2. 2012 - R12500
  3. 2013 - R13000
They include normal servicing and one set of tyres. The repairs were crankshaft sensor, tappet cover gasket x 2, sump gasket, crank case vent valve x2, radiator with pipes, valvetronic, ecentric?? shaft, vacuum pump. I still need to do valve stem seals so add another R5k - R7k. My clutch also has a shudder on it.

Personally I would not advise anyone to buy an E90 320i. Minimum must be 320d. If you can't afford a 320d then buy another brand.

I`m sorry but I dont agree with your statement.
As you stated these costs were tyres as well. The 320d has all the items you have replaced, and services work out the same in cost.
So from a maintenance perspective, and to keep to the OP`s question, how would you justify a diesel being cheaper to maintain?
In retrospect, the diesel has more components that are pricey that can require unplanned replacement (Turbo, High Pressure Fuel Pump etc.)

I would say, unless you have a lemon, the 320i and 320d should cost you about the same to maintain if looked after in the long run.

I have a 2006 323i Exclusive. Bought in in 2011 with 100 000km in the clock.

Currently sitting on 141 000 km.

Since I got it, I have:

- serviced it every 10 000km.
- replaced 2 tyres
- replaced water pump and thermostat

I haven't done a proper detailed calculation, but I've spent about R20 000 on it thus far.
The water pump and thermostat were done under warranty (thank GOD).

Right now, I need to do a service, replace the clutch and possibly brakes pads and discs. I'll hear what else needs to be done when I take it in.

Just my 99 cents

Thanks for the input so far guys.

Looking back at my MP CIA, R36270.47 was spent on the car since 26/06/2013 (my ownership).
Quite a lot really, BUT to me it seems like these were mostly wear and tear items. Lets see what the next months and km's bring. If the MP bill continues like this then I will buy an extension. If not then I will trade for a diesel.

WHAT?!?!?!?!
R40k in 6 months?!!

What was that for? What did they change? What mileage did you do in that time?

Then again, dealerships charge ridiculous fees for labour. Might as well have a brain surgeon servicing your car. Not to mention the prices they charge for parts as well.

But still, that figure is quite offensive.

I have a 2005 E90 320D. I bought it 2yrs ago @ 160k and now sitting on 211k on original turbo with no software or decat. I'm having some
Challenges with my auto box(jolt) and so far have replaced harmonic bal, alternator, driver lock mechanism, and lcas. Will be looking to replace front shocks in the next 10k. Sorry don't have all costs on hand but quick math says I've spent R15k over and above normal services.
