Wow, glad that you got this all sorted out!! I still need to replace my car's thermostat which I think remains either partially open or is a bit more intermittent, but has to be replaced!
I did test another MAF sensor on my car (thanks to Rory for assisting here with his 130i) and the car drove a lot better, so I am going to have to replace my car's MAF sensor - expensive part yet again! But it seems to be part of the problem that I have been having with regards to varying weather and temperatures to be precise - the MAF does measure intake air temperature as well as air flow, so if those readings are not accurately being measured it will affect fuel/air mixtures.
Will most likely replace this next month and see how it goes. The pinging was not solved (at least not completely) with this test MAF sensor, but the car drove much better and much smoother! I really think that these MAF sensors only have a certain lifespan and tend to deviate slowly giving skewed readings to the ECU. And I am not even using an aftermarket or oiled air filter...
