E46 330i Weird Sound / I'm freaking out!

Does the vibration only occur at idle, like sitting at a robot or in the garage?

If so, 99% chance it's your Disa. Once it goes, the flap just jumps around, and because the airflow isn't even, it causes the whole engine to shake.

swap number 5 coil to another cyl and see if it follows...
The problem is, no 4 first misfired, then I cleared codes, started again and then no 5 misfired.

Yes only at robots that I noticed. But problems come back as misfires on the engine.

Came across this, wonder if this could be an issue, the misfires aren't linked to a specific coil, one coil causes problems, then the problems move to another coil

Is the car down on power? If it is, then it's definitely a faulty coil.

I have spare coils here at home. That error code sounds like coils. The rattle is still a myth. Sounds like clutch/flywheel related. But sort the idle out first and take it form there.

So I just did another diagnostic, and guess what? No misfiring, idle is normal, but there is still a clinking sound every couple of seconds (Sounds like something might be loose).

So I think this problem might only show it's ugly head when the car is hot, will test this tomorrow.

Lets say this is only related to when the car is warm, what could the problem be? Could it be that the disa is acting up? I will remove the disa and idle valve tomorrow and inspect and clean it (Like Andy suggested yesterday)

I didn't feel any power loss, just the same problem I had from the begining, sometimes there are hesitations on full throttle :thumbdo:

Thanks man, much appreciated.

Your rattly base noise as you dscribe it is Your DMF or dual mass flywheel is poked badly... Last I remember gizmo had one for sale,

Can't help on your misfire code... Was it an active code or just stored inactive error?

Sorry for your troubles..

Hi Kish.

There is no codes related to the cars performance or anything else mechanical, just those misfires that disapeared. Will check today again.

I will send Mr Gizmo a message now, thanks man

This white 330i was only misfiring when hot. (cyl # burn fail codes) Turned out to be bad spark plugs. New plugs sorted it right out. But you've replaced yours already? I reckon we should try coils first...

So its definitely only happening when hot, now its cyl 3 misfiring and the others are fine

Im going to say Vacuum leak... I had one and it caused multiple misses exactly like what you have... only seemed to happen under some circumstances...

Seems that you could be right. I was at Andy and he removed the Disa for me, turns out the flap is completely broken loose.

Thanks. Truns out it could be the Disa, which causes the vacuum problem??

fix the disa... its probably that :) it will affect airflow to the engine making it hard for the ecu to make it run right...

When the DISA goes, it doesn't go gracefully. My car made the same sound when it went, hence my certainty :)

Glad you got to the root of the problem - hope nothing else got hurt in the process

FYI, if you can't fix the DISA, or get a new one today, you can run the car without the flap until you are able to replace it. Just remove the flap and the broken rod which holds the flap in place, then put the unit back.

Anyone know where I can find a unit on a Sunday? Someone maybe have a spare laying around?

Yeah currently the flap is removed, car still idling uneven and consumption's through the roof. The metal pin is still there thank goodness, and the bottom plastic pin was broken, the flap itself is abit "grinded/worn".

Will check and post some pics of it.

you could take the flap out and use cardboard and duct tape to blank off the hole while you work on a fix... wont be pretty but will do the job and you can at least drive the car...

if it were my car i would just get a new one and SG the weak points...

Glad we removed the flap. Don't want that thing bouncing around the manifold. I'm pretty sure you could get the whole DISA from bemows for the same if not cheaper than the repair kit.

While the DISA is in a poor shape are we sure t is the cause of the rumble?

Almost positive, checked some symptoms of the disa, exactly what I am experiencing.

The horrible sound is completely gone now.
