hey all.....last week i picked up a dice...astra opc.......new shape.

i kicked his ass but i could feel the car isnt what i expected....did the onboard secret computer(thanks biofreak) and my reading came back at between 100- 108 L/H

its suppose to be 140 and higher....then i cleaned the maf sensors....

then the car after its been driven hot and left for about 10 mins wont start...if you plug the one of the maf sensors out the car runs ....as soon as they run both together then the car dies...if you plug both out the the car also runs...almost better than with the 2 installed....

so ive ordered them from my contact in the states....R4200 later and both are on the way...thats with delivery costs.

hectic... look, the maf tests are directly related to the altitude and barometric pressure.
Up in Jhb the normal results are anything from 115-130 l/h.
In my car with more airflow etc I get a max of 143l/h when everything is perfect and the moon lines up with the M5's hood emblem etc :p

What did you clean the mafs with?

What did you clean the mafs with?

electric contact cleaner...then 90% alcohol then cd lens cleaner...ive cleaned them 3 times....no avail....but the mafs are on their way....

so i jhb youre getting 143l/h?so you aggree my reading for bloemfontein is a bitty low then?

Slightly low... Ani was getting 90's here when he had the problem. The issue wasn't maf related though. It turned out to be a faulty cps.

Also, maf test readings are HEAVILY dependent on the above facts... Like I said, I can get results of 120-143 on mine at any given time... Have you checked faults on your car?

You should have rather left the Mafs...you should only clean mafs with proper maf cleaner...

what is cps?

is it camp position sensor?

iam pretty sure its the maf......because sometimes the car would die when the car came to a stand still...this was before i even cleaned them!

yes, it's the camshaft position sensors. There are four of them and they normally store a code in the comp.
Check the errors before you replace anything.

iam pretty sure it was the mafs.....i mean i should have made mince meat of that opc....when the i dropped the pedal the car almost hesitates then only engauges.....from 4th upwards it feels like there is no torque.....after i cleaned the mafs the car def felt more responsive....the kak starts when you switch the car off.....then she wont start

Update....

Here is a very interesting little test ive just performed.....the car ran with faulty maf till it reached temp.when i wanted to start the car again....dead....unplugged the maf and the car started!

this indicates faulty maf?correct?

i did the L/H test with one maf only....guess what?same reading i was getting with both mafs plugged in 102 L/H

interesting hey

My car was almost slower than a CORSA OPC, thanks to a faulty CPS.
The symptoms were that the car was very sluggish, no torque and reluctant to rev.

I got the fault codes read and it definitely had logged CPS Sensor fault codes in the DME.

Before I knew what the problem was, I did the MAF test and even unplugged my MAFs.
The car was pretty-much the same with or without the MAFs plugged-in : so that ruled-out the MAFs.

Judging by the symptoms you've mentioned, it does sound like MAFs but you need to get the DME/ECU checked first, in case it has logged a fault code for something else.

PS. You can get new MAFs for about R1500 each on Bid or Buy.

sweet....but like i said earlier.....my car starts then dies...i unplug the one maf...then the car idles...and the l/h reading the same with one as with both plugged in....

if it was cps then the car would still die even though i unplugged the alleged faulty maf right?but when plugged out the car she goes again..

Faulty CPSes don't cause the car to die/stall in most cases.
MAFs do.

But I'd get the DME checked for fault codes before spending R5k on MAFs

It would be nice to get cheaper MAFs thats for sure! I fell over backwards when BMW quoted me for a MAF on the 7 and 5.

I did do a little research on the ones that are for sale on BidorBuy about a year ago. They seem to be identical to the ones for sale on EBAY. The feedback on the international BMW forums is not very good. People found that they tend to break down very quickly and or give poor feedback, particularly on the V8 models...meaning that the car runs worse that it did with the faulty MAF.

Cant be sure, but the way I look at it, they are expensive for a reason. Even if you go the VW or Range Rover route, you are still spending almost R3000 for a MAF. One going for R1199 does set off alarm bells IMHO.
