E34 540i auto rough idling

Hi guys,
My '95 E34 540I is idling like it's having a tantric orgasm and it's running exceedingly rich. I checked the single vacuum hose at the rear of the intake manifold and the other blanked-off hoses...all are OK. I also sprayed water over them and the intake hoses to check for airleaks. Nothing. I don't hear any slurping noises and if I remove the dip-stick or oil-filler, there is little change in the lumpy-idle.
Next step seems to be the PCV. It seems to be accessible if I remove the whole rear cover of the manifold that is secured by 7 Torgue-screws. Is this removal for access to the PCV feasible? (without removing the whole manifold etc) and if so what do I need to order from the stealer, in other words, where exactly is the PCV?

A useful address that shows the whole caboodle.

Thanks

Thanks

Do you get a huge puff of white smoke on cold starts ?

Not at all. Just very lumpy idle initially for a few seconds (almost stalls) then smooths off a bit but not too much. The exhaust reeks of fuel although, surprizingly enough, there's not too much smoke. Once warm, things improve a bit more but it's still rough and smelly.

Thanks,
If I disconnect the AFM, it gets a lot worse. What are the symptoms of a faulty PCV?
I live in Benoni. Any ideas on who can read the ECU around here. A dealer will be, er, uneconomical.

Your help is much appreciated.

Sounds similar to what I fixed with Ian's E39 540....... Injector stuck open.

In sequence check:

1) AFM (You have already, if you unplug and it get's worse then it's working just fine)
2) Plugs
3) Ignition coils
4) Injectors
5) Fuel rail pressure
6) Compression test
7) Check for shorted wiring, ECU O2 sensor blanking plugs etc

Keithg I think Leonard one day mentioned that he have the cables for the E34's and he stays in JHB South, but is in Cape town currently. Chat to him

Thanks again guys....
Last thing, it still goes like hell so there is no missing pot, burnt valve or suchlike.
Cheers.

If I don't need the ADS (And I won't I can use OBD only for the E39) and I have to buy a separate interface for the Merc...

Why not

Make me an offer on my ADS/OBD interface... Cost me R1900 from Germany and is a very nice professionally built interface. Obviously I don't want the original price, but it's almost brand new and it's really cool to get into an E34's brains with DIS:)

Nudge: Nudge

So, is the idling sorted?

No. I haven't got to a stealer to have her brain read yet. I try to use her as little as possible because the richness will play havoc with cylinder wear and oil dilution.

Can anybody tell me what the symptoms of a faulty PCV are?

Further to this, I removed the inlet temperature sensor. It was full of black gunk so I cleaned it with alcohol, tested that it changed ohmage when subjected to heat/cold and replaced. Slight improvement. I then tackled the PCV by spraying water around it and the idling changed and a very slight sucking sound was apparent. I guess that its the PCV. I will post my replacement procedure upon successful completion.

Similiar problem my thread I posted for my E39 540i. The funny thing is if I leave the car in the garage overnight and start her in the morning, the idling is far better than when I leave her overnight outside the garage.

When cold the engine idling is so erratic the engine vibrates is if its has hot cams! Once the engine heats up, the car seems to behave itself. The interesting thing is the smell from the exhaust which smells a bit rich!

Maybe I can get help too;

My 530i has a slight misfire almost inaudible, but engine idles smoothly. My AFM seems to be kaput, if you unplug it there is no change in the idle, if anything, when you blip the throttle the response is better with the AFM unplugged...I'm suspecting one of the coils though, I remember when my mechanic open her up to replace the head we found one of the coils out of place. Or should I be looking elsewhere?
