So today while out shopping for Triump parts, I stopped by A lil german car wrecker. and got myself some e34 Steering knuckles as steering was my next job.:praise:

They had a Z3 but only had one straight trailing arm

But I came across this which has me in 2 minds now...

Instead I came home with these...

What am I doing?
Well I’m going to use one for the lower joint on the rack(e34 has same spline count as the M3 rack). For the top joint I’m using one half original e30 and other half e34.
While apart, I’ll clean and relube the wee bearings and clean the shite out of it.
For the rod I’m using 2 shafts from the e34, and I’ll use a similar clamp as on the e34.

Here is the e30/e34 hybrid.
Not in pic are the caps that have the roller bearings in them. Need to replace the wee rubbers.
Ill get back to it tomorrow evening.

Wow,

Never knew they were replacable - this is probably why my knuckle is a bit "sticky" at one point...Well worth a clean.

I have additional e34 Steering bits if you need...Actually the whole front and back end.

I would be interested to find out what bearings these knuckles use, and if they only available at the dealers? Please post the said, once obtained.

Thanks for the updates - btw - the e39 M5, would just work, so dont think about it....do it!!!

On another note, I see on your cross member - you have added extra welding, have you seen what the guys have done at VAG on the net, they actually add an additional plate onto the underside and space weld it, just stiffens the bracket up.(it has a large diameter hole in it, so that you can stick a socket in).

Indeed! I’ll get a picture later of the caps and bearings! It’s the cause of the “notchy”
Feeling alright!

For the cross member I’m actually going to be designing some underside removable bracing, for a few areas! I did see the VAG job, also a great setup!

Yes the m5 engine would definitely win. I’ve done this engine in an e30 before.
But for this project, the budget won’t allow

So continued with my steering linkage over lunch today!
Here’s the caps which house the bearings.
As you can see, 30+ years of Shit had accumulated.
Good clean, and reassemble. Smooth as silk now!
Warning, if you have large hands like me. Have patience:roflol:

Thanks for the Pics, so you simply remove, clean, re-grease and in it goes...Im sure this is an off-size bearing, similar to the one in the steering column...Agents only...

Silly question - how did you persuade those little fellas out of there? Needle rollers are just to fine for my finesse...:hammerhead:. I am assuming you remove those retaining clips, do they just tap out, or it it something for my trusty thumb slammer?

Correct sir!
So what I did was take a soldering iron to the wee tabs to heat them up. I could then easily bend the tabs to the open position.
Removing the caps require careful pressing.
Don’t be harsh on them! End of the day, if the caps bend out of shape. They won’t allow the bearings to turn freely! Back to square one

Today I had an hour spare so I stripped down my rear brake calipers for reconditioning.
I’m using e46 328i rear brakes.

My scope is to strip down/clean/repaint.

I bought new pistons, hydraulic seals and dust protection seals from BMW.

First step was to remove the piston.
Easily done if piston is not corroded!

Once you pull out 3/4. The dust protection seal can be popped out of the piston groove.

After removing piston and dust protection seal.
The Hydraulic seal can be seen. It sits in the second groove towards rear.

At this point you clean both grooves. Depending on level of corrosion. Wire brush attachment for drill can be used.

Once all cleaned. You are ready to reassemble!
Ensure to use either assembly lube or brake fluid.

I’m going to be sandblasting and repainting my calipers.
Once I’ve finished doing that,
I will post pictures when reassembling.
