Crash's Jezebel in for a Rebuild-Rebuilding an e46 S54 UPDATE on page 26

Unfortunately I am busy editing my new film, so when I have time, I get back to the video. Let's just say it's been three years in the making.

That being said, maybe I should start a new thread dedicated to all the videos I have made. Keep them all in one thread maybe?

The car has lost compression in two cylinders and has developed a knocking sound low down in the engine. She sounds like a DIESEL and runs like shit if I have to be honest. Fuel consumption has also increased.

Errors on the DME is a Camshaft error and camshaft synchronization error (possibly caused by a dead camshaft sensor that was drenched in oil because of oil leaks still present on the motor.) Apart from an oil leak on the actaul engine, the car has experienced such bad blowby due to the compression loss that the tappet cover gasket was actually blown out from the side of the engine and oil came spewing out. See image below of the rubber gasket that was pushed out due to excessive blowby.

Compression figures are as follows.

Cylinder 1 - 145
Cylinder 2 - 145
Cylinder 3 - 145
Cylinder 4 - 105
Cylinder 5 - 105
Cylinder 6 - 145

Initial thoughts of the cause of the noise down low are flywheel and/or thrust bearing. Other thoughts are the actual rod and main end bearings due to compression loss and fuel mixing with oil, that would suck as they are VAC performance bearings and are not cheap. Either way, I'm not waiting to find out if it is bearings or not. So on Tuesday she goes in to have the head removed to find out why she has lost compression and the cause of this noise.

I am hoping it is only a headgasket issue, but my gut tells me I am in for a full rebuild again.

Fcuk dude, I am sorry but having followed this thread from start, I think it's time to call it quits. I know it's not something alot will agree with but sometimes a lemon will remain a lemon.

Really bad misfortune with this car and it's really unfortunate because you are so passionate about this car:thumbdo:

I'd have torched this car long time ago

Unfortunately torching the car is easier said than done. There are parts on this car that are worth too much to just flog it off. The suspension, brakes, the vorsteiner rims, the light package, the diff, the carbon ac schnitzer mirrors, subframe and boot reinforcement etc are worth the price of the car alone. Let us not even mention the parts inside the engine. I even looked at buying an M135i and putting this car aside... but there was no soul to the M135i.(sorry M135i drivers, but its true).

We shall see how bad it is come Tuesday.

Things we think may have happened but are not sure.
1. Over fueling due to a tune file being wrong may have caused bore wash.
2. A piston ring installed upside down may have caused bore scrape and thus compression loss.
3. Piston rings not being gapped correctly may have cause the same.
4. This one is most unlikely but its here none the less. The bore/hone on the cylinder walls was incorrect and not according to CP/Carrillo specifications, thus causing compression loss.

Either way... There is a knock sound in the engine as mentioned before and this is either something going wrong inside the engine or flywheel. I will try record a video and post it for you guys.

Lastly, I have taken the car to a number of different mechanics as well as BMW fanatics who work on and own these kind of cars to get their opinions. Some think flywheel, others think something inside the engine. The BMW mastertech guys who own shops think it is the engine... so, I am leaning more towards their opinion on this one.

I am not looking for your guys sympathy. Truth is I wasn't even going to mention this on the forum, but I need to know the truth about what happened to this car as I paid a shitload of money for this engine and this isn't fair.

NOTE: This was not caused by the supercharger. Only bad installation of the engine parts, complete failure of the engine parts or excessively bad tuning could have caused this.

Ei man, weve been watching you go through this whole thing twice, this is the last thing I expected to happen to Jezebel. Hope you get to the bottom of this :sorry:

Yeah Xack, I know. I feel like the biggest idiot on this forum right now. A laughing stock really.

Then maybe its time to dump this engine and replace? Could be theres something irregular in the structure of the motor that someone can't pick up?

Peter was the last to work on this engine correct?

That is an option I have looked at. Getting another block possibly, but we will have to open her first and check where this compression leak is from.

I forgot to mention we did a wet compression test on the car and when pouring oil into the cylinder, the compression spiked. This rules out gasket failure and points more towards the piston rings themselves. Piston rings will seal up and compression will rise when oil is poured directly into the cylinder.

Yes, Peter is the last to have worked on the engine internals + Vanos. Cam timing was last done by Alex last November. The supercharger was removed by myself and Burgy. These are the people who have worked on the car.

Dude, I don't think anyone's laughing at you and you're no idiot. It's not like you took any shortcuts. Sometimes shit just happens.

I can't believe this.. sorry bud. All the love, time and money only to be rewarded by more problems, it really must be a pain!

I can tell you now as a fellow e46 // M3 driver and iam sure I speak for most Of them, when I say, we've all been admiring the amount of effort and money you'very invested in this car, it must be the most modded/decorated M3 I know of and nobody is laughing at you Bro, we feel the pain with you. This car (and Andy's 808) is the very reason iam driving one today.
